For several thousands of years now, mother India is known for her spices and history even states that many invaders were attracted to invade her mainly because of her natural wealth. Even in the present circumstances, an Indian kitchen is considered incomplete without spices. The great thing about spices is that they can be taken either before, during or even after a meal. They can be added to different dishes to make them healthier. They can be used for a wide range of purposes like for preparing health drinks, for salad dressing, etc.

What does Ayurveda say about spices?

Ayurveda states that spices, play an important role towards digestion and assimilation of food, thereby contributing towards maintaining a healthy and balanced digestive fire or agni. In India, spices are added for heavy cuisines to bring down their ill-effects on the health. Ayurveda recommends this because when heavy foods are not provided with spices, they can produce toxins, which are denoted as ama in Ayurveda. Ama will lead to blockage of body channels known as srotas. There are some spices that are effective in removal of toxins from the body. Here are the details about the top 5 spices that should be present in your kitchen as per ayurveda:

1. Coriander:

It is stated that the coriander seeds are the best friends of any cook. This is because it can play a major role towards integration of other herbs that in the process of cooking. Ayurveda states that this spice has the ability to balance the body and mind. It can also be effective in curing urinary, respiratory and digestive disorders. It can also cure skin ailments caused due to aggravation of pitta dosha.

2. Ginger:

Ayurveda states that this is an irreplaceable spice in any kitchen. It is known for its digestive property and in addition to adding flavor to the foods it can add spiciness to the foods as well. It can provide excellent remedy to the respiratory disorders caused because of aggravation of vata and kapha. In addition to adding it in cuisines, it can be added in herbal tea as well for curing common cold and cough.

3. Cumin:

This spice is generally used as a flavoring agent and these seeds are added for food seasoning in dining tables. Cumin is known for its digestive properties and it has also got antiseptic properties as per ayurveda. In addition, it can improve the functioning of pancreas and liver, thereby enabling the body to absorb nutrients and cleanse accumulated toxins.

4. Fenugreek:

Fenugreek is known for its valuable healing properties. It can effectively cure menstrual, nervous, respiratory and digestive disorders and it can contribute towards weight loss and can purify skin as well. Generally, ayurveda recommends diabetic patients to soak a spoon of fenugreek seeds overnight and have it along with water in empty stomach in the morning for bringing down the blood sugar level in a natural manner.

5. Turmeric:

Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-septic and therapeutic properties. It is considered an unavoidable part in Indian cuisine as it can improve metabolism and reduce the chances of undesirable fat deposits.
