Ayurvedic View Of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a kind of arthritis that is known to affect the spine. Health care providers state that this is a chronic inflammatory issue that generally affects the sacroiliac joints, particularly in young men. In most of the cases, the onset of this condition will be rapid with repeated episodes of low back pain and stiffness. Sometimes, the pain travels to the thighs as well. Generally, the symptoms will be worse in the early morning, thereby leading to inactivity for few hours after rising from the bed.

The vertebrae might fuse or grow jointly, thereby resulting in a rigid spine. These modifications can either be severe or mild and even the issue can lead to stoppage of posture as well. However, early diagnosis of the condition will help in effective treatment towards controlling stiffness and pain and will also help in prevention of major deformity in patients. Even though, this condition is known to occur in any age, it is mostly known to affect men in their twenties and teenage.

What causes this condition?

Even though, the actual cause is not identified, it is assumed that it can be caused due to genetics and it is most common in people with family history of this condition. This is actually an autoimmune disorder, wherein the tissues of the body are destroyed by its own defence system.

Symptoms:

Generally, patients with this condition will experience stiffness in back and lumber region and low back pain as symptoms.

Ayurvedic view:

Ayurveda believes that this condition is caused due to increase in the level of vata dosha, thereby causing an imbalance in this dosha in the body. This imbalance causes this kind of arthritis in the spine and it can even lead to long-term disability as well. In this condition, the disc that is present in the vertebrae becomes inflamed, thereby causing movement limitation.

When talking about ayurvedic treatment for this issue, it will begin with detoxification for elimination of unwanted toxins and appropriate diet suitable for treatment will be prescribed along with herbal preparations. Even, panchakarma techniques like svedana, patra pinda, sarvangadhara and kati vasti are known to benefit patients.

As pain in joints are caused due to the formation of toxins in the body as per this ayurvedic system of medicine, it aims at digestion of those toxins with the help of herbs and by balancing the increased level of vata dosha. Experts practicing this system of medicine are of the opinion that herbs like giloy, ashwagandha, fenugreek, turmeric, guggul and dry ginger will help in effective treatment of this condition.
