Ayurvedic View Of Vitiligo

Vitiligo, which is otherwise called as Leucoderma is a pigmentation disorder, wherein the cells that make pigment in the skin are destroyed. This causes white patches in the skin in different parts of the body. These types of patches also occur in the mucous membranes and the retina as well. Even, the hair that grows in the areas of the skin that are affected by this condition turns out to be white in some patients. This happens because this is an autoimmune condition that affects the human body.

Ayurveda believes that the important cause behind this condition is viruddh ahar sevan, which means eating foods that are of opposite nature at the same time. For instance, taking fish and milk together is a viruddh ahar sevan. This will result in the formation of toxins in the body, which in turn will disturb the immune system, which again affects the cells that produce pigmentation gets affected.

In addition, this condition is said to be connected with some inflammatory or auto-immune conditions like pernicious anemia, psoriasis, diabetes and thyroid. Even, hereditary factors can also lead to this issue.

The common symptoms of Leucoderma include:

• Loss of color inside the mouth

• Premature grays of hair in the scalp

• White patches in skin

Ayurvedic view:

Ayurvedic experts state that this condition is caused due to increase in the pitta level in the body. Pitta is nothing, but the dosha that symbolizes fire and is manifested in the skin, apart from other organs. Generally, this dosha is classified into 5 types by ayurvedic experts. One of the types is Bhrajaka Pitta, which makes the color of the skin to change. This type of pitta is imbalanced in patients with Leucoderma and this in turn leads to increase the toxin level in the body. Consequently, the deeper body tissues like lymph, muscles, blood and nutrient plasma will get impaired, thereby leading to depigmentation of skin. Experts state that this is a deep-rooted disease and so it needs particular treatment that encompasses right diet and specialized herbal combinations to bring down the level of pitta and for cleansing out the unwanted toxins from the body.

Diet and lifestyle advice from ayurvedic experts:

• It is recommended that patients with this condition should include neem in their diet in some form or another.

• They can also include moong dal in their diet

• They are recommended to keep away from sore foods like pickles, yogurt and other sour fruits and vegetables.

• Junk foods should be avoided

• Alcoholic and flavored drinks should also be avoided.

• Non-vegan foods are not good for these patients. The reason is that these foods are antigenic and so they can worsen the anti-immune process of the body.

• Foods that are rich in Vitamin C, should be either avoided or consumed in minimal quantity

• Keeping the skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids will be helpful

• Whole wheat products and whole grain products are better to consume as against highly refined foods like pasta.
