Ques. 1        What is menopause? When does it occur?

Ans.              Menopause is the ending of the menstrual period. This phenomenon normally occurs between the ages of 45 and 52 even though it may occur before of after this time. The cause for this is the decrease in the hormone production by the ovaries (Estrogen and Progesterone).

Ques. 2        What are the symptoms of menopause?

Ans.              The symptoms of menopause are.

  • A tendency towards brittle bones (osteoporosis)
  • Irregular menstruations, sometimes with a lot of bleeding and others with almost none, occurring each time with less and less frequency.
  • Insomnia
  • Hot flashes and sweating during the night.
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Changes in personality.
  • Cardiac problems
  • Vaginitis and urinary tract infections

When menopause is over the women become free from a complete series of physical and psychological discomforts. This allows her to lead a more complete and stable life.

Ques. 3        What are the causes of menopause?

Ans.              Either excessive estrogen is produced or not enough progesterone is produced. The emotional aspect of excessive bleeding during menopause is mainly because of the very thought of growing old. This plays a key role in either decrease or increase of the menstrual flow. Besides menopausal symptoms, the consumption of alcohol and caffeine in large quantities may produce irregular bleeding. Profuse and irregular bleeding may also occur because of fibromas or cysts in the uterus. In some cases, these cysts may be of a cancerous origin, which is why a biopsy or a medical check-up is recommended. The causes of irregular and abundant bleeding in women in the menopause stage are due to the absence of ovulation, as consequences which causes, an imbalance in the hormonal production of estrogen and progesterone.

Ans.              Fish liver oil also has a high concentration of vitamin – D. Protein intake must be reduced while grain and vegetable consumption increased. This diminishes the risk of having osteoporosis. The consumption of organic farm-fresh products such as wheat germ, alfalfa, etc. is important. Hot flashes are a result of a decrease in the production of the estrogen hormone. To diminish hot flashes you should eliminate coffee, cola beverages and alcohol, besides living a quiet life without stress. The recommended elements during menopause are the intake of ginseng and large doses of vitamin –E (600 IU/ daily). Since Osteoporosis is another problem present in postmenopausal women, the intake of 800 to 1,500 mg. of calcium is recommended. Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt have high calcium content. In order for the calcium to be assimilated there must be vitamin-D in the body. This is produced in the skin when it is exposed to the sun’s rays.

Ques.5         Which medicines are good for menopausal problems in Homoeopathy?

Ans.              Biochemic-15 is recommended for an overall menstrual regulation. Lachesis is a good remedy in this case.
