METABOLISM & METABOLIC HEALTH

Qst1. What is health metabolism?

Ans. Healthy metabolism is the continuous process of breakdown and renewal performed inside cells, as well as between cells, that result in growth, energy production, waste elimination & the control of your body functions such as a digesting food, distributing nutrients in the blood, breathing, blinking, talking etc.

Qst2. What are the symptoms of metabolism?

Ans. Symptoms —
i. Impaired fasting Glucose — Upper Limit of Normal at under 110 mg/dl.
ii. Fasting Hyperglycemia — Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 — Fasting Sugar-Upper limit of Normal at above 180 mg/dl.
iii. Insulin Resistance (IR) — Normal amount of insulin inadequate to produce normal insulin response from fat, muscles and liver cells.
iv. Impaired Glucose Tolerance — For two hours Glucose levels of 140-199 mg/dl.
v. Central Obesity — Fat deposit mainly around waist — Male pattern of apple-shaped adiposity, waist: hip ratio > 0.90 (male); >0.85(female) and/or body mass index > 30 kg/m2.
vi. High Blood Pressure above - 130/85
vii. Waist line above 40" and 36" for men and women respectively.
viii. Elevated Triglycerides greater than 150mg/dl.
ix. Decreased HDL Cholesterol (Good Cholesterol) less than 40 mg/dl for men and less than 50 mg/dl for women.
x. Fatigue
xi. Brain fogginess and inability to focus. Sometimes the fatigue is physical, but often it is mental.
xii. Weight gain, fat storage, difficulty in loosing weight. For most people. too much weight is too much fat. The fat in MS is generally stored in and around the abdominal organs in both male and females.
xiii. Depression. Because of the deranged metabolism depression is said to be the prevalent psychological symptom with MS.
xiv. Intestinal bloating. Most intestinal gas is produced from carbohydrates in diet. Metabolic Syndrome sufferers who eat carbohydrates sometimes suffer from gas.
xv. Sleepiness. Many people with insulin resistance get sleepy immediately after eating a meal containing more than 20% to 30% carbohydrates.

Qst3. Describe the causes of metabolic syndrome?

Ans. Earlier we followed advice given by our elders to remain healthy but the younger generation does not even follow that, We continue to maintain our body without any formal training and understanding.
The main cause of Metabolic Syndrome is the change in lifestyle. Most of us do not realize that, at what point of time our lifestyle started changing and by time one realizes it has already caused some irreparable damage. Infact, most of us are not aware about the needs of the body to function in an orderly manner. Other factors which also attribute to Metabolic Syndrome are-
i. Food/water and Air pollution
ii. Highly refined and polished food-non-fibrous diet
iii. Artificial life- away from nature
iv. Intake of drugs/alcohol/tobacco products and toxin substance.
v. Stress & strain
vi. Radiation
vii. Chemical in the form of drugs and medicines

Qst4. Which suggestions are advisable for metabolic syndrome?

Ans. Do not compromise in schedule of physical exercise at any cost. Nothing can be more valuable than your own self. The first line treatment of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is change in lifestyle (i.e. caloric restriction and physical activity). However, the specific diseases should be taken care off separately. Change in lifestyle should be taken up gradually in a phased manner & it should not be abrupt change. Keep a check on obesity, BP, Diabetes,Triglycerides, LDL through regular monitoring. Appropriate physical exercise is essential for resolving Metabolic Syndrome (MS).
