A Solution For Ulcerative Colitis - Fecal Transplant

Most of us have heard about liver transplant and kidney transplant, but have you heard about fecal transplant. I can hear you asking whether it is ‘fecal’ or something else. Yes, of course, it is the fecal, otherwise called as poop, which is the human waste.

What is this procedure all about?

  • Fecal transplant procedure, which is otherwise called as stool transplant procedure is something, wherein the doctors will put the stool of a donor deep into the intestine of a patient suffering from severe infection in the gut.
  • Even though, this procedure has found to be effective and successful in treating patients with severe ulcerative colitis in foreign countries, it is gaining ground in India only recently.
  • In short, during this procedure, the healthy bacteria are processed from the donor and they are transplanted to the intestines of the recipient.

Precisely, this procedure works by restoring the normal flora through the faeces of the donor, the imbalance is corrected and the normal functioning of bowel is re-established.

Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon:

This hospital is the pioneer in performing faecal microbiota transplantation, which is the other name for this procedure. The Director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Sciences at the Hospital Dr. AvnishSeth, said that a 44-year old man with ulcerative colitis, underwent this life-saving procedure recently with the donor being one of his family members. The doctor has further added that six more patients other than this patient has already underwent this procedure and are leading a healthy life. Also, the doctor added that one more patient is also waiting for the procedure.

What was the condition of the patient?

When talking about the 44-year man, who recently underwent this colitis treatment was suffering from this health issue for the past 11 years. The problem he has been experiencing is that he was passing stools mixed with blood on most of the days. Many steroids and other medications were prescribed for him, but nothing worked out. This is why the doctor recommended fecal transplant for the patient and there was marked relief just nine months after the procedure was completed. The doctor also added that the patient is now off medications. After the procedure has proven to be successful on many patients, the hospital now prescribes this procedure for patients with severe faecal infection, where the medicines prescribed for healthy gut functioning do not work out.

Apollo Hospitals too offer this treatment:

When talking about this treatment for colitis, Dr. AnupamSibal of the Apollo Hospitals that they have completed this procedure successfully on a single patient. The doctor further added that the gastrointestinal tract in the humans have both good and bad bacteria. Naturally, there is a balance between them and when this balance gets affected; many symptoms show up in the body. He added that the purpose behind fecal transplant procedure is to get the healthy bacterial balance right. He stated that the initial results of the procedure were satisfactory.

At home procedure to reduce cost:

When talking about faecal microbiota transplantation, Dr. Seth of Fortis Hospitals, this procedure is carried out in Western nations at high costs. But, to bring down the cost, ‘at home’ model is carried out at home.

So, this new procedure even though, it looks something embarrassing is going to be the ideal method for treating faecal infection.
