There are currently about 50 million people with Diabetes Mellitus in India. The number is expected to double by 2040. The disease, along with its complications, threatens to have a crippling effect on the health and economy of a developing nation like India.
The existing public health care system in India is as such stretched with combating communicable diseases and dealing with the emerging epidemic of Diabetes and its complications. It is important to note that the disease particularly affects the productive segment of society, whether rural or urban.
To tackle the situation and to create a lasting impact globally, Chellaram Foundation, has established the Chellaram Diabetes Institute – A Not for Profit Institute in Pune with state-of-the-art facilities.

The Chellaram Foundation is a public charitable organization established in 2008 in memory of Late Kishinchand Chellaram and Late Bhai Lokumal Kishinchand Chellaram. Mr. Lokumal Chellaram was the Chairman of the Group for over fifty years from 1951 to 2002 and consolidated and expanded the business empire founded in 1916 by his father Kishinchand Chellaram.
The main objective of the Research Program at CDI is to develop a research unit with technology core laboratories that will facilitate national and international collaboration among clinicians and basic scientists. The goal is to promote mechanistic studies to understand the cause of high prevalence of Diabetes among Indians and to rapidly translate discoveries to reduce the burden of Diabetes in India.
The laboratory of CDI is extended over an area of 5000 Sq.Ft. It is proposed to include a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory, Bio bank, facilities for clinical research and bioinformatics, a tissue culture facility, research laboratory to perform basic science and a mass spectrometry unit. Diagnostic Laboratory will be divided into three sub sections:-

Besides, there will be separate rooms for central sample accessioning, storage and biomedical waste.
The entire set up will be integrated through a state-of-the-art Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to have a systematic and error-free work flow and data management. Read More....
Education and Training
At CDI we believe that this is one of the areas that will have a very positive and substantial impact on the course of Diabetes in India.CDI conducts short term/long term courses for practicing General Medical Professionals, Super Specialists, Post Graduates, Podiatrists, Para-medics - such as Educators, Dieticians, Physician’s Assistants, and Patients.
The CME Program of CDI is accredited by the Maharashtra Medical Council and targets to train about 120 to 150 practicing doctors and about 500-600 Para Medics every year to benefit from these courses which in turn would benefit thousands of patients.
