Foods To Avoid When You Have Low Thyroid Function

If it is identified by the health care provider that there is low production of thyroid in your body, there are certain foods that you should keep away from. The reason is that some of these foods can interfere with you in overcoming the condition. There are certain foods that can affect the functioning of thyroid gland. You can convert the process of handling hypothyroidism easier, when you know what to and what not to eat. Here are the details about the foods that you should keep away from:

1. Fatty foods:

A recent research suggested that the fatty foods can come in the way of the proper functioning of thyroid gland to produce the right level of thyroid hormone. With low thyroid function, the ability of your body is already low in producing this hormone and it can further get down when you consume fatty foods. So, keep away from these eatables.

2. Gluten:

Patients with hypothyroidism should look for ways to bring down the intake of gluten. This is nothing, but a protein found in foods that are processed from grains like rye, barley and wheat. Eatables with gluten content can cause irritation to your small intestine and can prevent it from absorbing important thyroid hormone that is needed for its proper functioning.

3. Cruciferous veggies:

Some of the vegetables coming under this category are green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts. Not only these vegetables, other veggies belonging to this family should also be avoided. When digesting veggies falling under this category, the ability of thyroid in absorbing iodine will reduce. For proper working of thyroid, it is important that iodine should be absorbed.

4. Sugary foods:

Patients with hypothyroidism generally will have a low metabolism rate and this is the reason for patients with this condition to gain weight. To avoid further weight, it is important to avoid sugary foods that do not contain any nutrients. If possible, you can completely cut out sugar from your diet.

5. Soy:

This estrogen rich food can bring down the ability of your body in usage of thyroid hormone. The reason is that foods falling under this group are packed with plant-based phytoestrogens. So, patients with hypothyroidism are recommended to take soy foods only in minimal quantity.

6. Processed foods:

In general, processed foods are low in sodium content and so it is important that you should keep away from these eatables. When your thyroid gland is underactive, you will be at higher risk of high blood pressure. A good idea is to keep your sodium intake at less than 1500 milligrams per day.

7. Too much of fiber:

It is true that fiber is good, but including too much of fiber based foods in your diet can interfere with your absorption of thyroid hormone.

It is better to keep away from the above-mentioned 7 foods, if you are diagnosed to have less active thyroid gland. Weight gain is the important symptom of hypothyroidism.
