Reasons Why Backache Should Never Be Ignored

Health care providers state that pain in the back can arise in humans due to a number of reasons. Even, some diseases and conditions can show up with backache as the symptom. So, it is important that when an individual has this sort of pain continuously, which does not get away even after taking complete rest, it is important to seek medical help to make sure that it is not a sign of some other health issue. Now, let us get into the three reasons why you should never ignore this pain and should seek medical help:

1. Muscle sprains and spasms:

In general, the lower part of the back that is present just above the hips is where the back moves when an individual lifts heavy weight, bends or turns. This can lead to strain or spasm in a single or more of the muscles that are present in the back. The lower part of the back is called as lumbar region and so this pain is referred by them as lumbago. This simply denotes ache in the lumbar region of the back. So, when you experience a severe pain in the lower part of the back after a heavy weight lift or some swift movement, it can be caused due to muscle sprain.

You can use over-the-counter muscle relaxants for external application and can get the intended relief. But, if the pain does not go away even after applying such gels, you can seek medical help.

2. Disc problems:

The spine in the human body is generally made up of 30 bones known as vertebrae. The individual vertebrae in the human body are held together by tough fibers known as ligaments. But, between these ligaments, there is a cushion known as intervertebral disc. This cushion helps in slight movement of the vertebrae, in such a way that the back can bend without any trouble.

When there is a sudden movement in the back, it may lead the disc to swell or even it can rupture entirely, which is referred to as slipped disc. As humans age, the health of disc can deteriorate automatically and some fluid present can automatically leak out. Like lumbago, this condition also happens in the lower part of the back, where most of the bending takes place.

When swelling occurs, the disc will also swell and this can cause a pinch in one of the large nerves present in between each pair of vertebrae in the spinal cord, leading to back pain. But, sometimes, the pain will not be experienced at the back, but will be felt in foot, leg or in the buttocksThe lower part of the back is called as lumbar region and so this pain is referred by them as lumbago. This is a condition that needs medical attention.

3. Other diseases:

As mentioned earlier, back pain will also show up as the symptom of some other diseases. So, when the disease is treated, back pain will automatically go away. In younger people, the disease that can cause this pain is ankylosing spondylitis, while in older people it can be caused due to osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.
