Generally, it is recommended that oral health should be ensured then and there by taking up regular dental visits. Teeth and gums play the major part in oral health and the health of these organs is highly important to prevent many other health issues in the humans.
Foods with calcium:
Generally, it is stated that foods with high level of calcium content like chicken, cheese and meat are good for oral health. The reason is that they are capable of protecting tooth enamel with the help of their phosphorus and calcium content. It is further added that foods that are rich in Vitamin A, C and D are good for oral health. Those falling under this category are poultry, whole grains, beans, leafy green vegetables, tofu, fortified cereals, spinach, potatoes, fish, eggs and beef.
Nuts are good:
Nuts are generally rich in minerals and vitamins and they can help in ensuring teeth health. For instance, peanuts are rich in Vitamin D and calcium, while almonds are rich in calcium. Cashews can stimulate saliva and can help to keep the oral line clean. Walnut is rich a wide range of minerals like zinc, potassium, vitamin B6, Vitamin E, niacin, iron, magnesium, thiamine, iron, folic acid and fiber.
Fruits are best:
Other good choices for ensuring oral health are crunchy and firm fruits like vegetables, pears and apples. The high level of water content in these foods can dilute the effect of sugars that they are rich in and they can also promote the flow of saliva. Saliva can wash away food particles and the buffering acid. Vegetables and fruits that are rich in fiber content are also healthier. It has been found that acidic foods like lemons, tomatoes are also good after heavier meals as they can minimize the acid.
Chews and dried fruits are worst:
As we have been told from our young age, candies and cookies can affect oral health. Even, french fries, pretzels, potato chips, muffins, breads, pies and cakes can bring the same effect on the oral health. The reason is that these foods are rich in sugar content and some of them can also stick to the teeth, thereby providing the right ground for bacterial growth. Dried fruits inclusive of apricots, prunes and raisins are not good for teeth as the sugar in these foods are highly concentrated and they can also stick to the teeth. Even, they are packed with non-soluble cellulose fiber that can bind and trap sugars.
Starchy foods are worst:
Starchy foods like french fries, potato chips and white bread are not good as they can attach themselves between the teeth. Bacteria can immediately convert starches into sugar, thereby affecting gums. Popcorn and ice are also bad offenders.
Water can be the best choice and this is particularly true in the case of fluoridated water. The reason is that this is the primary component of saliva. It can also work as the final rinsing agent to bring down the effect of even worst foods on the health of gums and teeth.
