The World Food Day is celebrated every year all around the globe on the 16th of October. The actual purpose behind the establishment of this day was to honor the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the year 1945. Every year, different themes are chosen for the celebration of this day and it is celebrated widely by many organizations, working towards food security inclusive of the International Fund for Agricultural Development and World Food Program.
Theme in day:
Last year (i.e.) in 2014, the theme of the day was ‘feeding the world, caring for the earth’. Now, you would be interested in knowing the theme of this year. The theme this year is ‘Social protection and agriculture’. On this day, events are organized in different countries of the world and celebrations are conducted in as many as 150 countries across the world. When it comes to India, it is celebrated on the 16th of October every year, in honor of the date of the formation of FAO of United Nations in the year 1945. What is FAO? It is nothing, but Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. In our country, it is also considered as the Food Engineers’ Day.
The 2015 theme:
As mentioned earlier, in 2015, the theme of this day is ‘social protection and agriculture’. The aim of this theme is to pay attention to the role of social protection in reduction of long-lasting food uncertainty and scarcity. This is planned to be done by making sure that people either get candid approach to the food or they find means to buy foods. It is also a feasible method for triggering agricultural production and local economic activity.
What is World Food Program?
When we are on the verge of administering the World Food Day, it is important to understand what is World Food Program and its role. The World Food Program is the food assistance branch of the United Nations. It is the world’s largest humanitarian organization that addresses hunger and promotion of food security. This program is shortly called as WFP and it offers food assistance to people from around the world. This program operates with its HQ in the country of Rome and it has more than 80 offices around the world in different countries. The purpose behind World Food Program is to help people, who are not able to produce or obtain enough eatables for themselves and their dependents. On this day, it is important to understand about food crisis and the actual meaning of the term ‘hunger’.
On the World Food Day, it is better to begin exploring what food means for people from around the world and also it is better to understand in what we grow and consume and the cultural importance of foods. The increasing cost of fuel and eatables is creating an impact on people from around the globe and unfortunately we are on the threshold of humanitarian crisis. It is stated that nearly one billion people from around the globe are at the risk of hunger due to food shortages. On this day, it is important to understand the issues associated with World Food Crisis.
What is hunger?
Many of us are blessed in such a way that we have never understood what is hunger in our lives. We have been blessed with wealthy parents and even after we grow, many of are blessed with good income generating sources. But, many people from around the world really find it difficult to get food at least once in a day.
For many people from developed nations, being hungry is a feeling that they get just because they have skipped the breakfast or lunch, due to non-availability of time. But, for people in many underdeveloped or even developing countries, hunger is something that prevents them from moving around. They are hunger not just because of timelessness to eat, but because of their poverty. On this world food day, let us join hands to help people fighting with poverty in their lives. Also, we should thank god or nature every time we sit before our meal plate for having given such an opportunity to quench the hungry feeling.
