World Parkinson's Disease Day

The World Parkinson’s Disease Day is celebrated on the 11th of April every year with a view to create an awareness among people about this degenerative disorder. As the day is fast approaching, let us keep ourselves informed about what is Parkinson’s disease and let us also understand some other facts about this disease.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

This is actually a degenerative disorder of the Central Nervous System that is known to mainly affect the motor system in the human body. In the early stages of the disease, the most obvious symptoms experienced by patients include those related to their movements. For instance, they might experience symptoms like gait, difficulty with walking, slowness of movement, rigidity and shaking of the body when they try to move from one place to another. In the later stages, there are chances of behavioral and thinking problems. Also, patients might experience dementia during the advanced stages of the disease.

Symptoms of Parkinson:

When talking about the symptoms of Parkinson, depression is stated to be the most common psychiatric symptom and patients might experience other symptoms associated with emotion, sleep and sensation. The main motor symptoms associated with this disease are jointly called as Parkinsonian Syndrome or Parkinsonism.

Causes of Parkinson’s disease:

Now, we are aware of what is parkinson’s disease and also symptoms of Parkinson. But, it is better to keep yourself aware of the causes behind this disease and let us learn the same here:

Even though, it is stated that Parkinson’s disease is an idiopathic disease, which means that the one without any specifically known cause, there are some factors like environment and genetics that can lead to this health issue. When talking about environmental factors, pesticide exposure and pesticide exposure are stated to be the major contributors. Exposure to heavy metals can also lead to this health issue in some patients. Even though, this disease is stated to be a non-genetic disorder, reports state that around 15% of people with this disease have a first degree relative with this disease.
