ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and generally the symptoms for this condition will vary from one kid to another. Some children with this issue will never be in a position to focus on any activities at all and they will be quickly moving from one task to another. However, some kids can focus, but they can concentrate only when the activity satisfies their curiosity and interest. Some children might be rambunctious, while some might be quiet and withdrawn. Children with ADHD will show terrible behavior and they will reveal inappropriate behavior at wrong time. When your kid has been labeled a freak, as a parent, it is your responsibility to find whether he/she is naturally naughty or whether he/she is showing signs of ADHD.
Distinguishing ADHD with the behavior of normal child:
Generally, kids show up signs of ADHD before the age of 7 and as kids are generally less concentrated, overactive and most of them always dream about something, it is difficult for understanding if it the normal behavior of the child or whether it is ADHD. If you find that your child is frequently showing ADHD behavior, it is better to have a serious look into the issue. It is better to identify his specific problems, so that you can sit with your doctor and can find the right solution.
Differentiating ADHD with other disorders:
The appropriate diagnosis generally involves ruling out the other possibilities and it is better to seek the help of a psychiatrist to rule out the chances of psychological disorders like depression and anxiety. It is also better to rule out other health disorders like sleep disorder, epilepsy and thyroid.
The diagnosis of this condition generally requires the combined efforts of doctor, parent, teacher and the child himself/herself. If you find ADHD symptoms in your child, it is better to get him diagnosed. In the process of diagnosis, different factors like the intensity of the symptoms, duration of the symptoms and the periods during which they occur. You should give honest and correct history of your child and also you should be careful about choosing the right specialist to get recommendations.
If your child is diagnosed to have ADHD, it is better to work together with the therapist, doctor and the school for implantation of a personalized treatment plan that meets the requirements of your child. This may involve appropriate exercise plan and diet. There are chances that some lifestyle changes might be suggested by the health care provider apart from medications for ADHD.
Medications: There are different medications that can be used either alone or in combination for best results. Generally, doctors will prescribe psychostimulants that can bring a calming effect on your child. However, some of these medications might show some side-effects and if such side-effects show up, it is better to seek medical help immediately.
Therapy: Generally, doctors might prescribe therapy for both the child and the family members. The behavioral therapy will teach the child how to manage disruptive disorder, while parents will be taught how to control the child during such behaviors.
