When you have the rare, but disorder that can be treated called as aplastic anemia, there will be a halt in the process of making new blood cells in the marrow, which is the spongy substance inside the bones. When this happens, there will be a reduction in white and red cells and platelets as well, while in some patients there will be reduction in any one of these as well.
Who will be affected?
Even though, any person can encounter this condition, it is generally common in people in their early 20s and in elderly people as well. When it comes to men and women ratio, it is found that both have equal chances of getting this health issue. There are two different types of this issue called as acquired aplastic anemia and inherited aplastic anemia. Generally, doctors can identify the type of issue in a patient after a complete checkup.
Inherited aplastic anemia:
Gene defects are the main reason behind inherited aplastic anemia and it is most common in young adults and children. When this issue is present in men and women, there are higher chances of leukemia and even other type of cancers as well. So, it is recommended to regularly visit a specialist.
Acquired aplastic anemia:
This is a common issue among adults. Reports state that with this disease something like chemotherapy or radiation treatment, toxic chemicals, some medicines and viruses like HIV can cause this type of aplastic anemia.
Generally, blood cells perform different duties. The red cells are responsible for carrying oxygen around the body, while white cells can help the body fight against infections. When it comes to platelets, they are responsible for prevention of bleeding. So, the symptoms of patients with aplastic anemia will differ according to the type of blood cell their body lacks. Here are the symptoms for different deficiencies:
Low red blood cells:
• Irregularity in heartbeat
• Chest pain
• Pale skin
• Shortness of breath
Lesser count of white cells:
• Frequent infections
Less count of platelets:
• Easy bleeding and bruising
If a patient experiences these symptoms, the doctor will be recommending a complete blood count analysis and a biopsy of the bone marrow can also be recommended for identifying the issue.
What is the treatment?
When your doctor can identify the actual cause of the condition, he/she will recommend the appropriate remedy for trigger, so that aplastic anemia can go away. But, the unfortunate thing here is that doctors generally find it difficult to pinpoint the exact reason behind this issue. If the case is not severe, no treatment is needed, unless and until the blood count reaches below a certain level. If the blood count is low, the doctor might be suggesting appropriate remedies and hormone supplements to make the bone marrow to produce more blood cells. To fight infections, some antibiotics and anti-fungal medications may also be prescribed.
