Atrial Fibrillation vs. Ventricular Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation vs. Ventricular Fibrillation

Fibrillation is something that denotes abnormal heartbeat. Normally, healthy human heart contract in a synchronized manner and the electrical signals that take part in the heart causes each of its part to work in sync with each other. On the other hand, the condition called as atrial fibrillation affects these electrical signals in the heart and leads to chaotic delivery. When the different parts of the heart do not work in sync with each other, the symptoms of this problem will become visible. There will be irregularity in the rhythm and beat of the heart and this part will not be in a position to pump the blood in the right manner and this will increase the risk of life-threatening issues.

Atria and ventricles – What are they?

Generally, the human heart has four chambers and the actual part of the heart where the fibrillation happens will determine the name of the condition. For instance, two chambers in the heart are called as atria and two are called as ventricles. If the fibrillation occurs in the upper portion of the heart, it is called as atrial fibrillation and if it occurs in the lower chamber, it is called as ventricular fibrillation and these conditions are shortly referred to as AFib and VFib respectively. Even though, these two conditions have similar name and they occur in the heart, they affect the body in different ways. For instance, VFib is stated as an emergency condition, which needs immediate medical attention. Even though, AFib is also serious, it will generally occur for years together without causing any symptoms.

How does AFib affects the body?

Generally, in a healthy heart, the blood will flow from the upper chamber to the lower chamber in a single heartbeat. When another beat happens, the blood will be let out of the lower chamber to different parts of the body. On the other hand, in the case of patients with atrial fibrillation, the heart will stop beating in harmony and so blood in the atria will not be completely emptied. Here are some details to know about this condition:

• It is not life threatening. However, if it is not treated, it can lead to life-threatening complications.

• The most serious complication it can create is stroke. When the blood is not completely emptied from the atria, it will start to pool, which can then clot and these clots can block the entire blood vessels, leading to stroke.

How does VFib affects the body?

This is an irregular electrical activity taking place in the ventricles of the heart. For patients with this condition, the heart will flutter and these rapid beats will prevent the heart from pumping adequate level of blood into the body. Here are some details to know about this condition:

• For patients with this condition, the different parts of the body will not get the blood needed for their proper functioning.

• It will also lead to quick sink of blood pressure and this may lead to sudden cardiac arrest and this is why it is recommended to seek immediate medical help.

How to prevent Atrial Fibrillation and Ventricular Fibrillation?

To prevent these conditions, it is recommended that people should quit smoking; blood pressure monitoring should be done regularly, it is better to avoid excess alcohol and caffeine usage. In addition to these things, it is also important to keep cholesterol and weight under control.
