Dehydration In Adults - Some Facts To Know

Dehydration is a condition that occurs when the body losses its ideal fluid level, mostly water loss happens as compared to the amount of fluids actually consumed. This means that more water moves out of the cells as compared to what is consumed by drinking. Generally, humans lose a lot of water every day not only through, urine, sweat and stool, but also in the form of water vapor in the breath we exhale. Not just water, a small amount of salt is also lost in this method. When this happens, the body will become out of balance or dehydrated. When water loss in the body happens in a severe manner, it can even lead to death, which makes it a serious condition to consider.

Causes:

Experts state that many conditions can lead to continued or rapid fluid loss in the human body like:

• A substantial wound in the skin like mouth sore or burn and severe skin infections as water is lost through the damaged skin.

• Too much exercise, heat exposure and fever

• Health issues like diabetes

• Increased urination due to infection, diarrhea or vomit

• Inability to get access to safe drinking water

• Inability to drink water like patients in breathing apparatus or coma

Symptoms:

Adults can identify whether the water content in their body has reduced with the help of certain symptoms like those mentioned below:

• Reduction in the output of urine

• Inability to sweat

• Fainting

• Sluggishness

• Confusion

• Feeling of faster heart beat

• Dizziness

• Weakness

• Swollen tongue and dry mouth

• Increased thirst

Even, the color of the urine can be used as identification. If it is concentrated and deep yellow in color, there are chances that you might be dehydrated.

When to seek medical help?

When a dehydrated individual experiences the following symptoms, it is better to seek medical help:

• Weakness

• Confusion

• Decreased output of urine

• Loss of weight

• Diarrhea continuously for two days or more

• More than 1010F Fever

• Increased or constant vomiting for more than a day

Diagnosis:

A number of simple tests and examinations can be conducted by the doctor. The doctor might recommend a blood or urine sample analysis. The reason for such examinations is to identify the underlying cause behind water loss in the body.

Treatment:

If the symptoms are severe in a patient, he/she will be admitted to the emergency department, where the focus will be initially on restoring the volume of blood and body fluids. In the meantime, the cause of water loss will also be identified with the reports from the laboratory. If the core temperature of the body is more than 1040F, steps will be taken to cool the entire body and here the cooling treatment can be given with the help of evaporation with fans and mists or even cooling blankets might be used.

So, this is a condition that should be treated immediately to prevent severe issues in the body.
