Here are certain facts to understand about diabetic retinopathy.

Types:

This term associated with eyes is something that connotes many disorders connected with the retina, which are created as a result of long-standing high blood sugar level in a patient. This condition normally affects diabetes patients, who are more than 40 years of age. This condition is generally classified into three types and they are:

• Background retinopathy

• Diabetic maculopathy

• Proliferative retinopathy

Symptoms:

Some of the symptoms associated with this issue include:

• Damage to the blood vessels in the eyes

• Retina inflammation

• Sudden changes in the quality of vision

• Eye spots and floaters

• Double vision

• Pain in eyes and

• Blurred vision

Risk factors:

Generally, patients suffering with diabetes for a long-term basis and who do not take proper care to keep the blood sugar level under control are generally prone to this condition. However, some of the risk factors associated with this condition include:

• Increase in the fat content in the body

• Poor control of blood glucose level

• Pregnancy

• Presence of protein in urine

• High Blood Pressure

• Increased swellings and

• Long-term diabetes

How is it diagnosed?

Generally, most of the patients seek medical help only during the second or third stage of this condition. Two different methods of diagnosis are followed by doctors to identify the stage at which this condition is present in a patient.

Two different methods of diagnosis are followed by doctors to identify the stage at which this condition is present in a patient. The two methods include optical coherence tomography and retinal angiography. These two tests can easily identify the level of damage caused to the retina and based on the level of damage the specialist will decide the treatment.

Treatment options:

There are three different treatment options and they are explained below:

Laser treatment:

This treatment pays attention to treating the damaged blood vessels in the retina. As the name of this treatment denotes, laser rays are used and during the treatment, blood flow is also rectified. Even, this treatment can stop new damages to the blood vessels and even though, no pain will be experienced with this treatment, it will have some side-effects on the patients.

Injection:

Anti-VEGF injections are also used as one treatment method. Here, the injections are directly administered on the eye for repairing the already damaged blood vessels in the retina.

Surgery:

This is the only option available for treating the condition, when it has reached its final stage for saving the vision.
