Different groups of blood donations & different countries' encouragements for Blood donations

Type or group of blood donations

Depending on the recipient of the collected blood, there are 3 different groups of blood donations:

1) The most popular one is called 'homologous' or allogeneic’. This type of collected blood is stored at the blood bank for ultimately transmitting to the needy but unknown recipient.

2) Directed donation means the donor and the recipient are known to each other and the collection of blood is fully directed between these two persons. But this is often seen to be rare when existing supply already exists.

3) Replacement Donation is the mix of these above two types. These types of donations are noticed in the developing countries. In this case a donor donates blood as the replacement of the stored blood to be transfused. This type of situation is mostly seen among the developing countries, (India being no exception, even though country like Ghana is already a name for example). This method ensures consistent supply of blood.

4) Autologous donations are very useful for those who have stored their blood in the blood banks for using afterwards, when in need, in most of the cases after surgery. These types of donations are also useful for making of medications.

In some cases these types of bloods are exclusively used for manufacturing.

5) The above type of blood collections are similar to therapeutic phlebotomy, which is exclusive for treating diseases like polycythemia vera or hereditary hemochromatosis. In this type, blood is treated to reinfusion or for manufacturing, but if it is found to unfit, the blood is discarded. The laws of the country have a great role to play in this matter. The collector and the donor both have other issues attached with the recommendations by the collecting organization.

Has WHO any role to play in the policies of blood donations around the world?

Yes, “WHO” (World Health Organization) plays an important role by recommending blood donation policies. But the fallacy is these recommendations are hardly followed in the developing countries. The reason is some testing needs specialized reagents, trained staff and adequate laboratory facilities. The developing countries may not have the facilities available or to be adhered to.

Donor compensation or encouragement

1) Different countries encourage Blood Donations in different ways. Spain has made a Monument in Avila for the Blood Donors. The feat is not only encouraging for the people who have already donated blood; it at the same time immensely enhances the spirit of the future donors. More and more people become motivated to be adjoined with the monument.

2) Red Cross of Singapore encourages the donors with the Ruby award for voluntarily donating blood. A memento is presented. Red Cross all over the world has mountainous presence as far as the issue of blood donations is concerned. When you need blood as recipient you must call your local Red Cross office. They are always with you in your dire need of blood. So if you feel that you or your accomplices want to donate blood, you can equally call them, like other such organizations.

3) UK encourages blood donations in other way. They award the volunteers who donate blood by different counts like 25, 50 or 100 times of donations. This means you donate more and more number of times. A memento is presented.
