How To Know If You Have Thyroid Disease?

Thyroid is a gland that is in the shape of butterfly and it lies below the Adam’s apple. Generally, these glands have double side lobes that are attached by a bridge in the middle. It is responsible for secretion of different hormones that are jointly called as thyroid hormones. The important hormone is thyroxine, which is otherwise called as T4. When the gland is in its normal size, it cannot be felt. There are varied kinds of disorders connected to thyroid gland and three of the common are Goitre, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Here are some details in this regard:


This is the general term used for denoting the thyroid inflammation. They do not cause any issue or they can denote deficiency of iodine or a condition connected with thyroid inflammation.


This is generally caused by overactive thyroid nodule or Grave’s disease. This denotes that the thyroid has become overactive and is releasing excessive hormones. Reports state that women are more prone to hyperthyroidism as compared to men and also the chances of this disease is higher in younger people of less than 40 years of age.

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism:

If you have any of the following symptoms, it is better to get the level of thyroid hormone checked:

• Weakness or muscle cramps

• Slower heartbeat

• Inability to conceive

• Difficulty in swallowing

• Depression

• Nervousness

• Inability to tolerate cold

• Difficulty in concentrating

• Dry skin

• Constipation

• Cold feet and hands

• Fragile nails

• Problems in remembering things

• Dizziness

• Fatigue

• Sudden decrease or increase in weight

• Puffy eyes

• Hair loss


This is a condition, wherein there will be lesser production of thyroid hormone in the body. The most common cause behind this condition is the damage caused to the thyroid due to autoimmune disease. In short, this condition denotes that your thyroid is not in a position to produce enough thyroid hormone. This will affect your entire body.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism:

Symptoms of this condition generally show up at a slower pace and some of them include:

• Irregular or heavy menstrual periods that may last for 5-7 days.

• Constipation

• Difficulty in concentrating

• Problems associated with memory

• Weakness or sluggishness

• Difficulty to tolerate cold

• Sluggish body movements

• Cold skin

• Yellowish shade to the skin

• Coarse and thinning hair

• Brittle nails

• Dry skin

Generally, your symptoms will rely on your age, the longevity of the problem and the seriousness of the condition. The older you are the more likely you will experience symptoms.

In addition to the above-mentioned symptoms associated with different types of thyroid issues, it is also important to seek medical help, if any of your family members have any type of thyroid issue.


To keep a healthy thyroid level, you can rely on diet, exercise, medicine and making some lifestyle changes can also help. Once you get this issue, it is a condition that needs continuous medication.
