Hyperparathyroidism - A Disease With Excess Parathyroid Hormone

Hyperparathyroidism is the higher production of parathyroid hormone in the bloodstream because of the over activity of one or more parathyroid glands in the body. These glands generally have the size of a grain of rice and it is generally situated in the neck. The parathyroid glands are responsible for production of parathyroid hormone, which will help in the maintenance of the right level of balance of calcium in the bloodstream and in tissues that rely on the calcium for appropriate functioning.

Type of hyperparathyroidism:

There are two types of this disease and they are primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Here are some details about these two types:

Primary: It is the swelling of one or more parathyroid glands that result in the extreme production of the hormone, thereby resulting in higher level of calcium in the bloodstream. This will in turn create a number of health issues. When it comes to treatment for this condition, surgery is the most common treatment for this type.

Secondary: This type occurs as a result of another health issue that causes low level of calcium at the initial stages and as times pass by, an increase in the level of parathyroid hormone level happens.

Symptoms of hyperparathyroidism:

Generally, this condition is diagnosed before actually the signs and symptoms are visible. When symptoms do occur, they are the result of dysfunction or damage in other tissues or organs because of high level of calcium circulating the urine and in the blood or when there is very little calcium density in bones. Here are the details about some common symptoms of hyperparathyroidism:

• Loss of appetite

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Frequent illness without any actual cause

• Kidney stones

• Osteoporosis

• Frequent urination

• Pain in stomach

• Joint or bone pain

• Forgetfulness or depression

• Fatigue

When should a doctor be visited?

If an individual experiences any of the above-mentioned symptoms, it is recommended to seek the help of a doctor to get the right diagnosis. This is because these symptoms can also be caused by other serious complications.

Causes of hyperparathyroidism:

Primary: The primary type can be caused due to some problems in one or more of the four parathyroid glands present in the body.

• A non-cancerous growth on the gland

• Swelling of two or more parathyroid glands

• Another uncommon cause is a cancerous tumor

Even though, this type occurs randomly, it might be caused by a gene in some people.

Secondary: Another health condition that causes deficiency of calcium is the reason behind secondary hyperparathyroidism. Here, the gland will have to do overwork for compensating for the loss of calcium. Some of the factors contributing to this type are:

• Acute deficiency of calcium

• Acute  insufficiency of Vitamin D

• Chronic kidney failure

Who are at risk?

• Women, who have gone through menopause

• Prolonged vitamin D or calcium deficiency

• For those, who use Lithium for curing bipolar disorder
