Knee replacement surgery is something that can help patients with severe arthritis pain and it will help the patients with their movement. The effective working of joints can be affected due to the damage to the cartilage around the bones of knees that can be caused due to different reasons like knee injury, illness and wear tear. If the symptoms of severe, the doctor might suggest this surgical procedure to provide the best relief the patients.

What is it?

During this surgical procedure, the surgeon will take out the affected cartilage and bone out of the knee joint and will replace them with man-made joints. This surgical procedure is medically called as knee arthroplasty.

Knee arthritis symptoms:

In general, arthritis is of different types and the most common are rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Also, there is another common type that happens after a knee injury. Regardless of the type of arthritis suffered by a patient, the common symptoms include stiffness, swelling and pain in the knee. When years pass by, it might get so stiff that walking becomes harder and even impossible. Depending on the type of arthritis suffered by a patient, he/she might experience other symptoms as well.

Osteoarthritis of knee:

As age advances, the cartilage that provides cushioning to the knee joint can wear in such a way that one bone will begin to rub against the other. As a result of this, the normal movements of the knee will begin to experience more and more pain. This wear and tear is denoted as osteoarthritis and it is common in people of more than 50 years of age.

Rheumatoid arthritis:

This is a condition, wherein the immune system of the body begins to attack the joints, thereby causing swelling and pain. While the above-mentioned type can affect a single or two knees, rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that can affect all joints like feet, wrists and hands. This type can cause other symptoms like fever and fatigue as well.

Post-injury arthritis:

In some cases, arthritis will be experienced by patients after an injury due to tearing of ligament, breaking of knee bone, etc. These damaged ligaments and bones can cause damage to the cartilage over time, thereby causing stiffness and pain after some years.

When is surgery ideal?

Surgical procedure for replacement of knee will be suggested if other types of treatment do not work out and if a patient experiences the following:

• When he/she cannot walk very long or very well

• When he/she is not in a position to get in or get out of a chair

• If the knee is bowed in or out

• When the patient experiences moderate to severe pain when taking rest.

What happens during the surgery?

Generally, this operation will take between 1 and 2 hours. The surgeon will remove the damaged bone and cartilage from the knee initially. Then, a metal implant will be attached to the ends of the calf bones and thigh. To ensure that the new joint can move smoothly, a plastic spacer will be placed between the metal pieces.
