Low blood pressure

Knowing the blood pressure level is always a healthy deal for any one. Optimal blood pressure is diastolic pressure less than 80 and systolic pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg. It is always better that you have lower blood pressure, of course within certain limit. Talking about day-to-day blood pressure level, there is no such exact measurement which can determine your blood pressure is too low, provided there is no trouble being observed.

Can blood pressure level 85/55 be considered as health problem?

Unless you have any symptom of problem like low blood pressure, you need not be worried. In case you have any sign and symptom of chronic low blood pressure as below, you are the candidate to take care of:

i) Light headed ness or dizziness

ii) Syncope or fainting

iii) Unusual thrust or dehydration: This is a major cause for dropping of blood pressure. But it is never the case that dehydration is always the signal of low blood pressure. Dehydration is linked with severe diarrhea, fever, vomiting, strenuous exercise and overuse of diuretics. These are the serious causes for dehydration, because your body loses more water than you are taking in. Even body weakness can be caused by the mild dehydration as little as 1 to 2 per cent, and that ultimately lead to fatigue, dizziness, weakness etc.

iv) Blurred vision

v) Shallow or rapid breathing

vi) Depression

vii) Cold, pale and clammy skin

viii) Nausea

ix) Fatigue

x) Lack of concentration

Until and unless there is no symptom, low blood pressure is not a problem. But in case you are diagnosed with higher than normal blood pressure or if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, you may be the case for low blood pressure.

The causes for low blood pressure

a) Pregnancy, which may be during 1st 6 months of pregnancy when blood pressure is normal to fall

b) Prolonged bed rest

c) Blood volume decrement: In case volume of blood is decreased in any person, he or she will have low blood pressure. The significant factors responsible for the decrement of blood are major trauma, severe internal bleeding or dehydration. All these factors decrease the volume of blood and lead to blood pressure drop.

d) Some medications do impact on the body systems that ultimately lead to low blood pressure. The medications like diuretics and also some other drugs like erectile dysfunction drugs, drugs for Parkinson’s disease, tricyclic antidepressants,  beta blockers used for treating heart medication, hypertension etc. some of which are combined with narcotics, nitro glycerine and alcohol have the side effects and responsible for low blood pressures. Besides these, over the counter drugs and some prescriptions do cause low blood pressure when taken as the combined medications of HBP medicines.

e) Heart problems are not only a body condition with worries, it can further cause low blood pressure which sometimes become abnormal too, leading to heart failure, heart attacks, heart valve related problems and bradycardia, which is a problem of heart rate for which your heart may fail to circulate required amount of blood for meeting your body needs.

f) Nutritional deficiencies are marked by the deficiencies of folic acid and Vitamin B-12, resulting to anemia. Once a person is affected with anemia, he or she is most likely to be the patient of low blood pressure.

g) Endocrine problems can lead to anomalies in the endocrine producing systems that lead to hormone producing glands’ complications. This in turn, specifically turns out to breed the problems like parathyroid disease, hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid), Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency), in some cases, diabetes and low blood sugar.

h) Septic shock (Severe infection) means bacteria’s travels to other areas, most probably in urinary tract or abdomen or in the original infectious area. This follows bacteria’s ultimate entry into the blood streams. After entering into the blood streams, the bacteria produce blood vessel affecting toxins. The situation is life threatening and is also responsible for lowering down blood pressure.

i) Neutrally mediated hypotension is a condition which is unlike orthostatic hypotension, causing drop in blood pressure if the persons stands for a long period. In this condition a person experiences nausea, dizziness and fainting. Young people are the most of the victims of this condition. The reason being the miscommunication between the brain and the heart.

j) Anaphylaxis (Allergic reaction) causes anaphylactic shocks which are allergic reactions and so sometimes are fatal to those who are very much reactive to some foods, such as peanuts and some drugs like penicillin or also with the strings of wasps or bees. The characteristics of this nature react like breathing problems, swollen throats’ itching and sometimes sudden lowering down of blood pressure in a dramatic way.

In case a person has severe low blood pressure, he or she may suffer from the following conditions:

Ø Different nutrients and Oxygen insufficiencies in brain and in many other parts of the body are the end-results, which can trigger untimed shocks which can lead up to the death of the person.

Ø This can indicate about serious neurological or endocrine or even heart disorders.

What should a person do when he or she experiences sudden dropping down of the blood pressure?

In case a single sign or symptom is noticed, it is not alarming, provided the sign and symbol is not accompanied by other serious problems. However, a sudden blood pressure fall up to 20 mm Hg is a cause for concern with the symptoms like fainting or dizziness.

In the cases of rapid blood pressure fall in a person, the person may experience :

· Allergic reaction

· Severe infections

· Orthostatic or postural hypertension

· Uncontrolled bleeding

When can it happen?

While standing from a prone or sitting position for a long time, some persons may experience these problems. The blood pressure of these people falls down very rapidly and so results to light headedness, dizziness, fainting and/or even blurred vision.

The causes

Heart problems, dehydration, diabetes, prolonged bed rest and excessive heat can be the causes. The other causes for this problem may include medications like beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics and calcium channel blockers, antipsychotics, drugs for Parkinson's disease and antidepressants. Some other cause may include squatting or crossed legs and also sitting for a long time can also be the cause.

Right time for seeing your doctor

A person with light headedness or dizziness must consult a doctor before the problem becomes acute. In case you have low blood pressure or are dehydrated or you might have been exposed to the sun for a long time or you might have been the cases of hot tub bath, you are likely to be the candidate for low blood pressure and get checked by a medical professional. Whatever may be the cause, it is very important to notice either the slowness or the fastness of the fall of blood pressure. If you are the case, you must keep a record of the timings of the signs & symptoms of your low blood pressures.
