World Blood Donor Day and our Responsibility

World Blood Donor Day and our Responsibility

Apart from approximately 92 million blood donations all across the world, safe blood donations still seems to be a scarce commodity. Hence it is of crucial importance that we understand our responsibility and significance of donating blood.

Keeping the importance of blood donations and the current statistics related to blood donations in mind, World Blood Donor Day also referred as WBDD is celebrated each year on 14th June which is an yearly celebration, which is celebrated to express gratitude and generosity to people who have been saving lives by donating blood regularly. World blood donor day also aids in spreading general awareness about the safe and healthy blood donation and highlight its importance.

The central theme for this year’s World Blood Donor Day is “Thank you for saving my life”.

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated each year on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, which is on 14th June, 1868. Karl Landsteiner is widely acknowledged for distinguishing all the main blood groups in 1900s. Besides distinguishing all the main blood groups Karl also first introduced the modern system of the classification of all the blood groups which is currently used in many parts of the world.

Four co-agencies together jointly sponsor this massive and one of the most important events celebrated by the entire world. These agencies are the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), World Health Organization (WHO), the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) and the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations (IFBDO).

According the various researches it was observed that there is a necessity of blood approximately every second. But regrettably, every year approximately 12 million units of blood is needed in India to which approximately only 9 units of bloods is made available voluntarily via shelves of the respective blood banks.

As per the above mentioned statistics the unavailability of adequate bloods leads to many casualties in the face of accidents, complicated surgeries or any other medical emergencies

Approximately around 800 women suffer serious issues and in worse cases even death during the complications often witnessed during pregnancy and child birth all around the world. Intense bleeding in any of the case pregnancy, delivery or even after the birth is notably the biggest reason of deaths in maternal cases and moreover these complications can kill a woman in less than 2 hours if lady is left unattended.

Children often suffer from several blood disorders like sickle cell anemia, hemophilia and thalassemia. Disorders like these require consistent blood transfusions to maintain a healthy living and avoid and emergency situations. But as the blood donations aren’t adequate the inconsistency of blood transfusions results in the loss of many innocent lives.

A healthy blood transfusion aids the patient’s suffering caused due to various life threatening conditions. Besides acting as a pain relief, blood transfusion encourages and stimulates patients to live longer.

Blood donations are very important and should not be ignored due to any reason. Do not shy away from these donations as any normal person who is in an age group of 18 to 65 with hemoglobin level   of 12.5 or above, weighing above 45 kilograms is fit to donate blood. Blood can and should be donated in an interval of every three months. The blood donated is the extra blood that our body doesn't need and hence donating blood is extremely safe.
