According to a study by researchers at the US University has found that the total number of people who are infected by two of the most persistent mosquito-borne disease – dengue fever and chikungunya is higher than what is reported in India.
As per a study which included around thousand people across fifty different location in the state of Chennai, discovered that not even one person exposed any one of the above-mentioned diseases reported it.
Study leader Isabel Rodriguez-Barraquer, research associate in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland said that “Our results show that the extent of the problem has been vastly underestimated.”
Rodriguez-Baroque witnessed that people are not even aware of the disease or the condition they are in. As they asked the various participants if they suffered from dengue and surprisingly only of the participants said yes when the percentage of people who were suffering from such disease is around ninety-three.
Although disease like dengue has been a part of India since the 1940s, in the past few years, the recognition of the magnitude and intensity of the problem grew.
As per various researchers, it was estimated that on an average around twenty-three percent of the total people who are not suffering from such disease, get infected every year. Out of the above-estimated data, Chennai alone is the host of around two lakh twenty-eight thousand infections per year.
Rodriguez-Baroque also noted that “This rate of infection is extremely high, almost three times higher than in areas of Brazil and Thailand where transmission was thought to be high,"
Dengue Symptoms for diseases like chikungunya include high fever and pain in joints. Few other symptoms may also include a headache, muscle pain, rash or even joint swelling.
The most rapidly spreading virus which is extremely harmful is the much dreaded dengue Virus, which is transmitted by the mosquitoes and is the cause of sickness in tropics and subtropics. As a result over four hundred million people have affected annually.
There aren’t numerous vaccines which can provide protection against the dangerous dengue virus.
Rodiguez Barraquer further pointed out that in many cases the when the person gets infected by the dengue virus for the very first time, the virus may not harm the person after a point but if the same person gets infected again, the virus can be extremely dangerous.
As per the findings, various researchers stated that need to reinforce officials is important so that they can look out for such diseases and ways to find a solution to control it from spreading all across the country.
