Cholesterol is good

Cholesterol is a FAT which is produced by the liver and found in every cell in body and plays many functions. Even its excess amount is responsible for much severe disease, and then also is essential for normal body function.

Function of cholesterol that is essential for our body:

· Helpful in producing some hormones:

Steroid hormones are produced with the help of cholesterol. It is directly produced by conversion of Cholesterol stored in the adrenal glands, ovaries and the testes. These steroid hormones perform other vital duties to help the body function properly

· Helpful for Digestive system:

Bile acid is produces by liver with the help of Cholesterol. This bile is necessary for digesting the food that we eat. Only because of bile, fats can be digested and it reduces the risk of blockages of the arteries and cause heart attacks and heart disease.

· Helpful in Building Cells:

Structural component of cells is cholesterol .Each and every cells structure of our body is made by cholesterol and polar lipids. That’s why increase and decrease of cholesterol high affect the cells. This can cause other problem such as slow down the metabolize and production of energy, food intake and indigestion.

· Helpful in producing Vitamin D:

Vitamin D is produced when the sun’s ultraviolet rays reach the human skin surface.

High Cholesterol causes heart disease:

Because of High Cholesterol in blood and Cholesterol is builds up in arteries, causing a process called atherosclerosis, it is a form of heart disease. Then the arteries become narrowed and create problem in flow of blood and sometime blocked.  Lack of blood and oxygen cause chest pain and it is totally stops, and then it leads to heart attack.

Two forms of cholesterol:

· Low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) : This cholesterol is bad for our body because this is the main source of artery-clogging plaque

· High-density lipoprotein (HDL or "good" cholesterol): Clear cholesterol from the blood.

Triglycerides :

Triglycerides are another fat in our bloodstream and causes heart disease.

Foods that helps in lowering Cholesterol:

· Soya foods (15g a day) - soya milk, soya desserts, soya meat alternatives, soya nuts, edamame beans and tofu

· Nuts - a handful a day

· Oats and barley - providing the soluble fiber beta glucan

· Plant sterols/stanols - found in a wide range of foods

· Fruits and vegetables

· Foods rich in unsaturated fats - for example, rapeseed and vegetable oils.

Foods that increase cholesterol:

· Butter

· Ghee

· Hard margarines

· Lard

· Fatty and processed meat

· Dairy fats.

Factors that affect Cholesterol level:


Saturated fat and cholesterol in the food you eat are responsible for cholesterol levels.


High weight creates many problems such as increases cholesterol level. Losing weight can help lower your LDL and total cholesterol. And it can also increase the level of HDL.


Do exercise regularly, lower LDL and raise HDL. For cholesterol control you should be physically active.

Age and Gender

Cholesterol levels are high in old people. it depends on gender also. Before menopause, women tend to have lower total cholesterol levels than men. After menopause, though, women's LDL levels tend to rise.


Diabetes people are more in risk of high cholesterol.


Genes partly determine how much cholesterol your body makes. High blood cholesterol can run in families.

Certain medications and medical conditions can cause high cholesterol.
