Function of Kidneys and the symptoms of Kidney pain

Kidneys are the two organs whose function is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. Kidneys are located against the back muscles in the upper abdominal area. Kidney will be present in both the right and the left side of the body.

Functions of Kidney:

Kidney produces hormones that regulate blood pressure, red blood cell production, acid regulation and influence calcium, and electrolyte metabolism. Excess waste products and excess fluid are removed when the kidneys produce urine that is excreted from the body. Kidneys also produce hormones that stimulate red blood cells to be produced, that help to control blood pressure and help in controlling calcium and electrolytae metabolism in the body. Kidneys play a vital role in regulation of the body salt, potassium, and acid content.

Symptoms of Kidney Pain: 

· Anxiety or sharp pain that occurs in the back between approximately the lowest rib and the buttock.· For some other people, they may suffer from fever, painful urination, Nausea, Blood in Urine & Vomiting.

· Kidney pain itself is a symptom that may occur due to problems or diseases of the kidney.

· Kidney pain repeatedly occurs on one side of the back, it can occur on both sides at the same time and may emit towards the abdomen.

Some of the major basic causes of kidney pain or flank pain are as follows:

· High Blood pressure

· Diabetes

· Kidney Stones


· Congenital malformations in the renal system resulting in complete or partial blockage of urine flow.

· Drinking alcohol may cause chronic flank pain.

· Drugs that may harm kidney tissue.

People should not neglect the kidney pain as it may cause dangerous to the human body. As soon as u get pain, Please consult the doctor as soon as possible to avoid affecting the human body.

Common Test to diagnose the kidney disease:

· Initial tests usually consist of a complete blood count (CBC), kidney function and urine test.

· If kidney stones are suspected, then a CT exam or renal ultrasound is done.

· Patients with kidney stones often need repeat X-ray studies.

· Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be ordered to further define or differentiate underlying kidney and non-renal causes of flank pain.
