Importance of Folic Acid during Pregnancy

Folic acid is a B vitamin (vitamin B9). It present naturally in the form of folates in foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, oranges, whole grains, pulses, and yeast.

Folic acid helps to protect your unborn baby from developing neural tube defects. Folic acid is good for pregnant women as it works with vitamin B12 to form healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells are important because they carry oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body. Lack of folic acid in the body during pregnancy can turn to anemia. Anemia will cause due to lack of iron.

Importance of folic acid:


Defects of the baby occur during 3-4 weeks of pregnancy as the baby spinal cord and brain are developing during that stage. So, Folic acid is important to the pregnant women starting weeks of the pregnancy. Folic acid plays a large role in cell growth and development, as well as tissue formation.

Defects of not taking folic acid during the starting weeks of Pregnancy:


Lack of folic acid may cause Spina bifida, an incomplete closure of the spinal cord and spinal column anencephaly; it causes severe underdevelopment of the brain

Encephalocele, when brain tissue extend beyond out to the skin from an abnormal opening in the skull.

So, it’s very important to take folic acid for all pregnant women during the pregnancy. Only 50% of pregnancies are planned, so any woman who could become pregnant should make sure that she's getting enough folic acid.

Quantity of folic acid that pregnant women have to take:

During pregnancy, the pregnant women has to take 400mcg of folic acid during for first three months of pregnancy, 600mcg of folic acid during four to nine months of pregnancy and 500mcg while breastfeeding. If one is overweight and having diabetes during pregnancy, one should take 5mg of folic acid during that time.

Foods that contains more folic acid:

Brown Rice, Orange, Hard Boiled Eggs, Bran Flakes, Peanuts, Citrus Fruits, Baked Potatoes, Broccoli, Black-Eyed Beans, Granary Bread, Asparagus, Yeast Extract etc. These are some of the foods that contain more folic acid which helps for pregnant women’s.

All women, even if they’re not trying to get pregnant, should take folic acid. Neural Tube Defect happens when the neural tube does not close completely. It is one of the important part of the developing baby that becomes brain and spinal cord.
