Scientists at the Northeastern University in the United Kingdom have recently introduced a new antibiotic that is more effective in killing bacteria. Right from 1980, various kinds of bacteria have developed resistance power against different types of antibiotics.
The antibiotics that are currently available in the market can be effective only in finding the proteins present on the harmful bacteria and kill them. But, this new teixobactin antibiotic can work in a completely different way to those presently available in the market. This new antibiotic instead of fighting and attacking with proteins on the cell walls of bacteria directly works against that things that contribute towards formation of proteins in the walls of bacteria.
In general, the cell walls in the bacteria are made out of different types of substances and some of them are also various types of enzymes and lipids. Generally, these substances are the core for bacteria for causing damages to the body. The antibiotics that are presently available in the market are ineffective in destroying these enzymes and lipids. The reason is that these enzymes and lipids are made to kill cell walls and proteins of bacteria. On the other hand, the new antibiotic will attack the enzymes responsible for formation of cell walls on bacteria. This process will stop the quality of development of resistance power in antibiotics as the factors responsible for mutations are stopped. Mutation is nothing, but the process of development of cell walls and new proteins.
How is the new antibiotics made?
For so long, the antibiotics are made by conducting research in the bacteria that is grown in laboratories. On the other hand, the latest antibiotic is on the basis of development of uncultured bacteria in their natural atmosphere with the help of a small device called as iChip that can detach and help in growth of single cells. Until now, 25 various types of antibiotics were developed based on this new methodology used in the development of Teixobactin.
The iChip is highly exciting device that permits screening of previously uncultured bacterial for useful compounds. This new antibiotic is promising due to its novel mechanism of action and its comparative resistance to the development of resistance in the laboratory.
Scientists are of the opinion that this new drug has a long way to be more than a promise and a wish. If humans do not put strict controls on its use and treat it as a treasure, it will not last longer.
