Tumors in the skull’s pineal region or Benign tumors
If above types of patients are not in your circle, but is there any one, in your circle, who has the problem with Tumors in the skull’s pineal region or Benign tumors that include meningioma, acoustic neuromas, movement disorders or Parkinson's disease or other type of Medically intractable epilepsy or with and pituitary adenomas craniopharyngiomas? Some times you may also come across some one with a vein or an artery that have not formed properly or a patient may have the Arteriovenous Malformation or cavernous angiomas not bigger than 4cm. Here come Indian hospitals for giving many solutions for any of these above problems.
Gamma Knife system
The Gamma Knife system uses "isocenter" in all the leading Hospitals in India. The system is 201 Cobalt-60 sources. It is positioned in a ring around a central treatment point. A series of 4 collimators of 4mm, 8mm, 12mm and 16mm diameter are fitted in a Gamma Knife system, and the system is capable of performing sub millimeter accuracies.
The Gamma Knife system of course needs a head frame to be invasive onto the patient’s skull so that it can treat cranial lesions. Since it uses frame placement, Gamma Knife treatment does not require real time imaging capability as the frame stops any movement of the patient during the treatment. This is the reason that the Gamma Knife system has become very preferred than Cyber Knife treatment.
Actually it is not a knife; it is a mechanized process of directing 192 beams being radiated as highly focus gamma so that it can destroy any abnormalities including brain tumors. The process is beneficial for removing any physical trauma in addition to the majority of the risks that were seen in the conventional process of treatment.
What are the procedures in the Gamma Knife Surgery?
A Gamma Knife Surgery requires many important pre-conditions; they can be stated as below:-
1) The patient must come to the hospital one or two days prior to the operation for blood test and seeing the doctors like radiation oncologists, neurosurgeon and the operating doctor who all will be treating the patients at the time of operation.
2) A patient needs to allow the doctors for preparing their treatment plan by fitting him/her in to the Gamma knife helmet so that images can be downloaded in a 3d modeling simulator with the help of CT scan or MRI or any such advanced technology.
3) All the concerned doctors will record the medical history of the patient and physically examine the patient, and must not fail to obtain the consent of the patient for the procedures. 4) It is always advisable that your referring physician remain present during the procedure, if needed guide the treating doctors the best treatment plan and ensure you that he/she will be available to monitor the progress of the patient after the treatment..
