All You Should Know About Food Poisoning

Food poisoning happens when bacteria or other germs get into food and drinks. Even though, it will not be possible for people to see, touch and feel these microorganisms, they can create great impact on the body. Once these harmful microorganisms’ gets into the system of an individual, they begin to release toxins that are poisonous and this is why the condition is called as food poisoning. This will cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Health care providers generally use the term ‘food poisoning’ for describing an illness that comes on quickly after consuming contaminated foods. Generally, it will not last for more than a couple of days and the patients can get relieved without any further complications. However, in some cases the poisoning can be severe in such a way that it will demand visit to the doctor. When people need medical care for food poisoning, it will often be due to dehydration, which is a serious complication associated with food poisoning.

At home remedy:

As mentioned earlier, food poisoning will generally go away on its own in a few days. If this has affected children, it is better to ensure the following:

• He/she should get complete rest

• Drink plenty of fluids to protect against dehydration. Even though electrolyte solutions can work, anything other than milk and caffeinated beverages are better to have.

• To prevent the fluid levels from getting down, it is better to take frequent and small sips then and there.

• It is better to avoid dairy products and solid foods until diarrhea or vomiting stops.

Anti-diarrhea OTC medicines should be avoided:

When a child has food poisoning and the resulting diarrhea, it is recommended that anti-diarrhea medications purchased Over the Counter should be avoided.

Is it possible to prevent food poisoning?

Yes, this is highly possible with the help of the tips given below:

• Children should be taught to wash hand with anti-bacterial hand wash solutions, particularly after using bathrooms and before touching foods.

• Utensils, vegetable cutters and other related items should be washed with warm soapy water before use.

• It is better not to serve unpasteurized milk or foods that contain unpasteurized milk as ingredient.

• It is better to keep raw foods like seafood, poultry items and meat from other foods until cooking.

• It is better to use foods with expiration date and perishable foods quickly.

• Foods from animal sources should be cooked in a safe internal temperature and the remaining should be refrigerated in an air-tight container for preventing them from getting poisoned.

• Also, it is better to avoid drinking water from untreated wells and from streams.
