Anti-diabetic medications:

Beta blockers like metaprolol and atenolol slow down the rate of metabolism and utilization of nutrients, thereby resulting in weight gain. However, the newer beta blockers can be the best alternatives as they are not that much associated with weight gain.

Medications for inflammation:

Drugs with anti-inflammatory properties can lead to increase in fat content. Oral Corticosteroids recommended for inflammation when taken on a long-term basis can cause weight gain. These medicines make weight gain happen through different mechanisms. They stimulate appetite, bring about fluid retention and they also play a major role towards fat deposition in abdominal area when taken on a long-term basis.

Medicines for allergy:

Generally, drugs prescribed for allergy can contribute towards weight gain by blocking the chemical known as histamine in the brain. These medicines can cause people lethargic, thereby resulting in weight gain. Anti-epileptic drugs:

In addition to the above-mentioned drugs, Anti-psychotic medications, antidepressants and medications suggested for bipolar disorder and injectable contraceptives can also cause weight gain.
