5 Common Myths About Menopause

Right from time immemorial women are facing problems related to menopause. Earlier, they had only limited resources to get an understanding about the problems they face at this period. But, with many information available handy in the form of internet, books, health magazines and many other sources, many myths revolve around this topic and among the many, here are the top 5 of them and the actual facts as well:

1. Hormone replacement (HRT) can lead to breast cancer:

For this misinformation, the blame should be on the Women’s Health Initiative held in the year 2002. This report was submitted based on the study conducted among women in three different groups with 10,000 women for each group, which are as follows:

• A group was not using any HRT, where 30 cases of invasive breast cancer was found

• In a group that had unnatural progesterone and estrogen, 38 cases of invasive breast cancer was found

• In a group that used unnatural estrogen alone, less than 30 cases of invasive breast cancer was found

It was found that the estrogen alone group had lesser chances of breast cancer than the other two groups. The third group was again tested after 8 years to find that they had decreased incidence of breast cancer. So, it was concluded the hormone replacement can lead to breast cancer. But, the fact is that estrogen does not cause breast cancer, but it can accelerate the growth, if the cancer has estrogen receptors.

2. HRT is just for stopping hot flashes:

Not just taking away hot flashes, estrogen replacement therapy can do much more good things.

2. HRT is just for stopping hot flashes:

Not just taking away hot flashes, estrogen replacement therapy can do much more good things. Sometimes, a higher level of estrogen content might be prescribed to bring down the level of stress. This is done with a view to induce good sleep and it can also help in increasing libido and can help with healthy functioning of blood and heart vessels, can protect bones and can help with memory as well.

3. Hormones should be given only for a shorter period of time at lowest dose:

For some women, estrogen might be needed on a long-term basis for providing protection to heart, brain and bones. For some, it might be suggested for providing cure to vaginal dryness and decrease in cell production that might produce results like persistent pain and low libido.

4. Bioidentical hormone can be found only in compounded form:

This is just a myth and the fact is that bioidentical is a term that denotes that the molecular structure is identical to that of what is naturally produced by the human body. Even though, they can be compounded, they are present in a wide range of prescriptive forms as well.

5. Hormones can be obtained in better quantity when they are in the form of pills, troches and creams:

This is again a myth as hormones generally love fat and so if they are infused to the body in cream form they will stay as it is and will not delve into the body.
