Is It Now Possible To Prevent Cervical Cancer In Women By Vaccination?

Reports state that Cervical Cancer is the leading cause for cancer deaths among women in India. The report further adds that about 74000 deaths are occurring out of this issue on a yearly basis and more than 1.3 lakh new cases are being diagnosed. What is cervical cancer and what are its early signs?

This is the commonest cancer among women that occur in the mouth of uterus in the part called as cervix. Unfortunately, there are no specific early signs of this disease and some signs experienced by women are discharge with unpleasant odor, pain in lower abdomen and later other symptoms like pain during lovemaking, bleeding and weight loss may occur. This disease is caused by HPV Virus, which is expanded as Human Papillomavirus. Low immune system can increase the chances of this disease as women can get infected with this virus.

Can cervical cancer be prevented?

The great news to women is that they can now protect themselves from HPV virus attacks with the help of HPV Vaccination. Three doses of this vaccination are recommended for all women between the age group of 9 and 45 years. Better protection can be ensured when a woman gets this vaccination early. It is recommended that women, who are more than 30 years of age or those who are sexually active for three year, irrespective of whether they are immunized or not should go for annual screening for cervical cancer.

Treatment for Cervical Cancer:

The treatment available for this disease is extensive surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy will be given, which will be decided on the basis of the stage of the HPV attack. This is why it is recommended that women should go for a yearly screening. When this disease is diagnosed at early stages, complete cure can be assured.

What is the cost of the vaccination?

The cost of one vaccine is Rs.2500 in the market and women should take three of these vaccines for preventing cervical cancer. The vaccinations are available in two different names and they are Gardasil and Cervarix and women can just seek the help of their doctor to find the right one and can go for the vaccine recommended by their gyno. The former is recommended both for boys and girls in the United States, while the latter is for girls only. As this virus is transmitted through bodily contacts, when given for boys, it is believed that girls can also remain protected.
