Stages of Labor And Birth

Pregnancy is a stage when women feel both tensed and happier and as the months of delivery nears by, particularly if this is their first pregnancy, they will have many questions about childbirth. Even, some women begin to fear about the pain associated with delivery. To help them get out of the fear associated with delivery and actually to bring down the pain, women these days are recommended to do certain yoga exercises right from the early stages of their pregnancy.

Yoga both for physical and mental health:

Women doing yoga in addition to gaining physical health can also ensure their emotional health as well, which is highly important for the healthy growth of the baby and for the flawless delivery. Yoga will set a mood to face the delivery with joy and utmost confidence in women. Nowadays, there are many other therapies as well to help women get out of the fear and face the delivery with utmost happiness and joy. Here are some details about the stage of labor and birth for expectant mothers to know:

Three-stage process:

Generally, gynaecologists divide the process of labor and birth into three stages and here are the details:

First stage: This stage starts when the woman experiences contractions that will cause progressive changes in her cervix and will end with the complete dilation of cervix. This first stage is further divided into two phases and they are:

• Early labor: At this stage, the cervix will gradually thin out and will open.

• Active labor: At this stage, the cervix will begin to open at a rapid pace and there will be longer contractions that are stronger and closer to each other as well. The last part of this phase is often referred to as transition.

Second stage: The second stage will start when the cervix is entirely open and ends with the birth of the baby. This stage is sometimes referred to as ‘pushing’ stage.

Third stage: The third stage will begin right after the childbirth and will end with the delivery of placenta.

Wide variation in the length:

Generally, the length of labor differs from one woman to another.

Generally, the length of labor differs from one woman to another. For first-timers, this three-step process will take around 10-20 hours. However, for some it might take even longer hours, while for some, it may happen sooner as well. Generally, labor progresses more quickly for women, who have already given a natural birth.

False labor:

In some women, the contractions will happen at regular intervals when the cervix begins to progressively thin out and open. But, unless the labor starts all of a sudden and when a woman experiences no contractions to fairly frequent and regular contractions, it can be a false pain as well. In such a case, only your gyno can determine whether it is true labor pain or false. If you are yet to reach the 37th week of pregnancy and begin to experience contractions rarely, it is better not to wait until the contractions become more frequent. It is better to get the help of your gyno as there are chances of preterm labor as well.
