Uterine Fibroids – The Non Cancerous Growths

Uterine fibroids are generally growths in the uterus and they are known to appear in women in their childbearing years. Reports state that these fibroids almost never develop into cancer. These small growths generally happen from the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus. They grow either slowly or rapidly and even in some women they remain in the same size as well.

Some of them go through growth spurts, while some of them go away on their own by shrinking themselves. They can either be single or multiple and they can range in different sizes as well. Reports state that every 3 out of 4 women experience fibroids in their lifetime at least once and most of them are unaware of the existence as they do not cause any symptoms. Doctors generally discover them during a pelvic exam or during an ultra sound scan.

Symptoms of uterine fibroids:

As mentioned earlier, most of the fibroids do not cause any symptoms. But, some women can experience the following symptoms:

• Leg pains or back ache

• Constipation

• Difficulty in emptying bladder

• Pressure or pain in the pelvic area

• Heavy bleeding during periods

• Recurrent urination

• Menstrual periods that extent to 7 days or more

In general, the signs and symptoms associated with uterine fibroids are decided on the basis of their type.

Types of uterine fibroids:

• Submucosal fibroids that grow in inner cavity

• Subserosal fibroids that propel outside the uterus

• Intramural fibroids that grows inside the muscular uterine wall

When to see a doctor?

When a woman experiences the following symptoms, it is recommended to get the help of a doctor:

• When there is difficulty in emptying bladder

• When there is pain in the pelvic area continuously and when there is a shooting pain then and there

• When they feel that their abdomen has enlarged

• Spotting or bleeding better periods

• Cramps consistently with intercourse

• Painful or heavy periods

What causes fibroids in uterus?

Even though, the actual cause is not known, the following factors are known to cause uterine fibroids:

• Genetics

• Hormones like progesterone and estrogen tend to cause fibroids in some women. As these hormones reduce in production after menopause, fibroids go away on their own for women at this age.

• Other growth factors like substances that help the body in maintaining tissues like insulin are known to affect the growth of fibroids.

The important effect of fibroids in women in their childbearing age is that they cause infertility in women. This is why when some women go for infertility treatment, they are diagnosed to have fibroids, even though, and they do not experience other symptoms of its existence.

How are they diagnosed?

Uterine fibroids are generally spotted with the help of ultra sound scan.

Treatment options:

Generally, fibroids do not need any treatment if they do not cause any pain or other symptoms and watchful waiting can help women to experience that they can go away on their own. There are also medicines, non-invasive procedures, minimally invasive procedures and traditional surgical procedures.
