Autism - What To Know?

Autism is one of a group of neurodevelopment disorders. These disorders are otherwise called as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs). These issues are characterized by difficulty with social interaction and communication. Generally, patients with this condition will demonstrate stereotyped, repetitive and restricted behavior pattern or interests.

Signs and symptoms:

Generally, it is stated that the symptoms of this condition will be visible during early childhood between 2 years and 6 years of age. The most common symptom includes an identifiable delay in cognitive and language development. There are chances of signs of antisocial and obsessive behavior as well in these kids.

There is another type of PDD called as high functioning autism or asperger syndrome. Even though, this has the same symptoms like classic autism, it is characterized by primary communication and cognitive issues. Generally, the symptoms of this condition can vary from mild to wild. There are people, who are identified as autistic, but they move in the society without any issues. On the other hand, in some, it can bring a considerable impact on their lives.

Causes of autism:

Even though, the exact cause is not known, reports state that both environmental and genetic reasons can contribute towards this issue in children.


This condition is experienced by children from around the globe, regardless of race, culture or religion. Reports state that boys are more prone to this condition as against girls.

Kinds of autism spectrum disorder:

When it comes to Asperger Syndrome, there will be social and behavioral interaction and the symptoms experienced by these patients are generally lesser as against those with classic autism. PDD – Not otherwise specified is a type experienced by patient, who exhibit signs of autism, but does not fit into the categories of Asperger or classic autism.

Treatment and outlook:

The important point to be remembered by parents about this condition is that there is no specific cure to this issue. Just early and intensive behavioral intervention can help in achieving the right cure for kids. It is stated that earlier a child is enrolled in these programs; there are better chances of recovery. This is why parents should be highly cautious about unique behavior of their little one.

As conventional medicine is not providing the intended remedy, some alternatives like hyperbaric oxygen, chelation therapy and high dose vitamins are suggested for patients. Even though, these treatments are followed, there is not specific proof with respect to the effectiveness of these treatment methods. This is why it is recommended that parents should carefully evaluate the financial costs involved before investing on any of these treatment options for the sake of their little one to get out of the issue without any hassle.

Parents, particularly mom should actively watch the language and cognitive development of her child and in the case of any doubt she can just take her child to a child specialist. She can consult with the specialist to find whether something is wrong with her kid, as early identification can go a long way in providing the right cure.
