How did we all do in the womb? Had all had everything alright while there? Most probably “NO"-Part-3

How did we all do in the womb? Had all had everything alright while growing there?

Fetal movement & different stages of actions inside the womb

With the help of ultrasound technology we can clearly get impression of fetus’ movement in the womb.

a) After 8 weeks of gestations, we can see the movement of the fetus through ultrasound technology.

b) During 9 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus practices the breathing movements (although it is a practice not real breathing)

c) During 10th week of pregnancy, the fetus starts emptying his or her bladder.

d) During 14th weeks of pregnancy, the fetus starts moving his or her eyes.

e) Around 15 weeks of gestations, the fetus starts drinking amniotic fluid, surrounding it

f) Within the 16 to 20 weeks of gestation, pregnant women can feel the movement of the baby in the womb.

g) 20 weeks of pregnancy-- This is the time when the fetus can recognize sound.

h) 20 weeks onwards, we can see the fetus starts sucking his or her thumb.

i) After 26 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus can feel pain and also hear sounds

j) The common pattern of sucking thumb in adults are also seen in fetus

k) Fetuses that suck left thumbs are likely to be left handed, in the same likelihood those sucking right thumb are most probably to become right handed as they grow.

With the progression of pregnancy, the fetal movement becomes more complex. If the fetus practices all the movements, it is a good sign for 2 reasons: 1) The nervous and brain system of the fetus will be well developed and the 2) Muscles, bone and joints are formed in a correct way.

Fetal breathing

The actual breathing of the fetus does not start inside the womb. It is the mother, who breaths for the fetus and the umbilical cord pass the most needed oxygen from the mother to the fetus. Of course, breathing like movements are done by the fetus at 9 weeks of pregnancy. This helps the baby to breath straight away, immediately after taking birth.

Fetal eye movement

During 14th weeks of pregnancy, the fetus starts moving his or her eyes. By 24th week, the fetus can make complex eye movements just like we do in our normal life. Many of the cases, during the last 3rd of the pregnancy, it has been seen that the fetus has rapid eye movements. This is just like adults’ eye movements when dreaming, “May we say that fetus too are dreaming?”

Sound recognition

20 weeks of pregnancy-- This is the time when the fetus can recognize sound. In this stage, the fetus can hear only the low noises. With the progression of age, he or she can also hear higher pitched sounds. Once the fetus hears louder sound, he or she will startle and also move about.

If the fetus is older, it can discriminate between different languages, voices that include individual speech sounds like “Biba” or “Babi”.

In the grown up age the child can recognize the same music which she or he might have heard in the womb.

Tasting, drinking and urinating

During 10th week of pregnancy, the fetus starts emptying his or her bladder. The fetus passes urine straight into the amniotic fluid, which is a protective fluid that surrounds the fetus. After 15 weeks of gestations, the fetus starts drinking the same fluid, surrounding the fetus. Here is the time when fetus starts tasting different things, sourced from amniotic fluids.

In this stage, the fetus “likes” and “dislikes” different types of tastes. In case the amniotic fluid is sweet, he or she will drink it more.

Feelings of pain or becoming conscious

Fetus starts responding or become aware when he or she gets signals from outside. But when does the fetus start feeling pain? We the grown up, can express our pain or feel some one’s pain, when exchanged. But the fetus does not have this opportunity. That is why we need to study the matter very carefully for making an informed guess.

Only studying the physical responses are not going to be enough for comprehending the issue. The example, if the feet of the fetus is touched at 12 weeks of gestation, he or she will move away, but this does not mean that he or she can understand or feel anything. This is just like a knee jerk or reflex response.

There is hardly any connection, at this stage, between the higher levels of brain and nervous system. This act of links between nervous system and higher levels of brain is needed for conscious experience.

This type of connection between body and brain is needed for hearing sound or feeling pain. It is not advised to start this before 17 weeks of gestation. It is rather advised that after 26 weeks of gestation, when the fetus is functional and well formed. This can be started only by an expert medical professional.

After 26 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus can feel pain and also hear sounds. Un-established studies say that after 20 weeks of gestations the fetus can start hearing or feeling pain.

Prenatal stress that a fetus can respond to

When the fetus is older, he or she can make out the feelings of mother. Scientists have proved that when the mother plays computer game and gets anxious or stressed, the heart rate of the fetus also rises accordingly.
