In case the colour of our nails are not consistent or discoloured or has retarded growth, they are the indications of kidney, heart, lung or liver disease. However, if you have vertical ridges or white spots, they are harmless.

Some facts about the growth of your nail

The growth of fingernails is faster than toenails. This happens in the dominant hands. The growth of fingernail, on an average, is 3.5 mm (millimetres) per month. While the growth of toenails, on an average, is 1.6 mm per month.

Heredity, activity level, time of year and age are the determining factors for the growth of nails. Men’s nails grow faster than women, except during the pregnancy.

If compared with the winter, summer is the time for the faster growth of nails.

The reasons of hamper in your nail growth

Medications, trauma, disease, nutrition, fever, aging process and chronic illness are the reasons for growth hamper of nails.

Nail problem and what it means

Among all dermatological problems, nail constitutes to be 10 per cent of the conditions. The general state of our health is reflected by our nails. Thickening or discolouration of nails indicates about some health problem like heart and lung conditions, liver and kidney diseases, anemia and diabetes.

Symptoms of nail problems:-

Changes in shape, thickness, colour, swelling of the skin around the nails, pain, discharge and bleeding are the symptoms of nail diseases. Nail problems may affect a person throughout the life of a person, it may aggravate during the superannuating age.

50 per cent of all nail disorders are from fungal infections. The toenails are the more common reasons for these fungal infections. The reasons are toes are mostly confined to moist, warm and weight-bearing environment.

Types of nail diseases

Although few cases are there, melanomas’ growth are seen under the nails. They are often mistaken for some type of injury. In case any dark-coloured streak is visible in your nail plate, consulting a dermatologist at the earliest is the best step.  You must neither allow the nail to be discoloured nor get the size of the streak increased.

• White spots following any injury to the nail

• Splinter haemorrhage or the vertical lines under the nails are due to nail injury / diseases / drug abuse

• Because of injury, finger sucking, nail biting some bacterial infections, frequent exposure to water or poor skin hygiene you may get bacterial infection.

• Another nail problem is ingrown toe nails. This caused when nails are not trimmed properly, or due to tight shoes or due to digestive problem.

How to keep your nails healthy?

 Always keep your nails clean and dry, so that you can prevent any type of bacteria getting collected under the nail.

 Your nails must be cut straight across and slightly rounded in the centre. By practicing so, your nails will be not only strong; they will also be free from causing ingrown toenails.

 In case toe nails are difficult to cut or really thick, use warm salt water for soaking them for five to ten minutes and apply lactic acid cream or urea for softening your nails for trimming them.

 Wearing proper fitting or alternative shoes on a regular basis will help you. Tight shoes are the causes of ingrown toenails.

 In-grown toenails are never advised to be  self- treated

 Never to bite your fingernails. Biting nails means inviting infectious organism from the fingers to mouth. Nail biting means skin around the finger may get damaged and remain susceptible to future infections.

 Diabetic patients or the people with poor circulation are more likely to be the victims of nail problem.  Dermatologists must be shown the problem just at the sight of the problem

Safety of nail in salon

 Modern days are marked by beauty consciousness. Both male and female are equally crazy to frequent their preferred salons. That is why salons also follow strict guidelines in terms of sanitations. Even then, consumers are expected to make sure that the salon he/she visits duly maintains the cleanliness with their implements and the technicians there wash their hands between the clients.

 The people who like to get frequent pedicure and manicure should bring their own implements.

 As a consumer, you should never allow any technician in the salon to either cut or pushback your cuticle. If not cared properly, this may cause infection.

 Any time if you feel like burning or itching sensation, allergic symptoms etc. do not hesitate to show the problem to your dermatologist.
