"Salt matters" for our health but does more harm if taken excessively---Part 1

Take care of your health, while taking salt or salty foods

Salt is a basic need for our bodies but there are many ill effects of salt, if taken more than required.

What happens if we take excessive salts?

1) It enhances blood pressure

a) Extra blood pressure means hypertension that causes strokes, heart attacks, strokes

i) Strokes heart attacks etc. are responsible for disability and death. People of all ethnicity and races of many countries are equally affected by this single problem of high blood pressure.

2) Stomach cancer is also other problem due to extra salt intake that leads to untimely death.

3) Obesity,

a) Osteoporosis,

b) Kidney diseases,

c) Kidney strokes and

d) Vascular dementias are also the other conditions due to extra salt intake.

4) Problem of water retention is one more problem for those who take extra salt.

5) Symptoms of asthma are the other problems of extra salt intake in our body.

6) Diabetes and

7) Ménière's diseases are also the after effect of extra salt absorption.

Usually our body needs small amount of salt for maintaining chemical requirements of our body system.

Adult Children

1 gram                     Less than 1 gram

The maximum recommended salt intake per day

The recommended amount of salt intake per day is 6 gram

The normal salt intake per day (variations are also there from country to country)

Normally we take 8.1 grams of salt which is more than 8 times or 800% higher than required. That means every moment and every day we are risking our health conditions.

Advantage of lowering down the salt intake

The reduced amount of salt intake means blood pressure will remain in lower side, which by virtue will reduce the chance of any risk of disease. In case you can reduce 3 grams of salt intake per day, you are actually lowering down your blood pressure. The intake of low or high amount of sugar depends much on the group of people, such as children, male & female and the country or the region they belong to.

Blood pressure means the pressure exerted by the heart on the walls of the arteries. The arteries carry the blood throughout the body.

What cause high blood pressure?

The cause like lack of exercise, being overweight and intake of extra salt in the diet are the prime causes of high blood pressure.

Actual scenario of high blood pressure

Every third adult suffers from high blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as 140/90 mmHg. The most important fact is many of these people with high blood pressure do not know about their affliction.  The reason is the disease starts when the blood pressure level is normal, which is below 140/90 mmHg. You must regularly get your blood pressure checked by your general physician. It is always good that you have lower blood pressure.

General myth

People with high blood pressure are inevitable to become older quicker than others.



Take less salt, keep your blood pressure down, eat healthy foods which are not salty by dietary value and be regular to your exercises.
