Ways to Avoid Water Retention

Is it very often that you feel like you have gained weight overnight, particularly in areas like abdomen or the limbs? Does the ring, which was comfortably resting around you finger till yesterday, suddenly feels tighter? Are those running shoes digging deeper into the skin this morning?

Know if it is Water Retention

To be honest, all the above mentioned symptoms significantly indicate water retention or edema. Almost all the people retain a little amount of water which is normal. But with women it is a bit more complicated than that. Women tend to retain more water than men because of the regular fluctuations, which are related to hormones during PMS, also known as Premenstrual Syndrome. Although PMS is the major reason for conditions like water retention in women, but water retention can also be an indication of serious underlying complications related to health for example, diseases related to kidney, thyroid, and heart or in worse cases liver malfunctioning.

Drink more and flush more

One of the most common and paradoxical yet effective method to encounter water retention is, to provide the body with large amount of fluid intake per day. The logic behind this is not rocket science. The more fluid or water inside your body the more your body will feel the need to flush it out. The retention in body increases as you lower the intake of water. Hence it is very important to consume at least ten to fifteen glasses of water in a day to restrain your body from acting like a reservoir, which stores water.

You diet is another crucial factor

A diet which is well balanced will function to avoid any kind of water retention. Diet that contains low percentage of sodium, which is generally present in table salt, pickles, papads, cheese, butter, processed packaged food and high percentage of potassium, which is present in banana, peaches, plums, musk melons and raisin, can prevent the puffiness by maintaining the balance of electrolyte within the body. Including diuretic fruits in the diet like cranberries, limes, oranges rich in vitamin C and other similar citrus fruits with a combination of diuretic vegetables such as cucumber lettuce, cabbage, pepper, carrot, tomato and celery aids in building the necessary osmolarity within the cells, which helps them from avoiding water retention in the body.

Other effective ways to avoiding conditions like edema include – decreasing the intake of alcohol, anti-inflammatory drugs, oral contraceptive pills and most importantly beverages that are caffeinated. Caffeinated beverages include – tea, coffee and aerated colas.

As per various studies it was also observed that including primrose oil capsules as well as Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) can significantly reduce the intensity and frequency of water retention within the body.

Modify Your Lifestyle

· Try exercising on a regular basis

· Try not to stand for a long period of time

· Avoid wearing figure hugging or clothes that tight.

· Try and keep your legs in a raised up position, the long term effects can help in preventing the excess retention of water in the body and hence relieving discomfort.
