Asparagus, which is also referred to as garden asparagus is a spring vegetable. The scientific name of this vegetable is Asparagus officinalis. It is commonly referred to as sparrow grass. This vegetable is a perennial plant that lets flowers, and it belongs to the genus called Asparagus.

If you live in irrigation areas, you will find many wild Asparagus grown on their own. They will have pencil-like thin shoots. With the help of selective growth and breeding techniques, asparagus with thicker stem was developed by farmers to make them more eatable. Some asparagus will have a purple hue with typically sweeter flavour and delicate appearance as compared to the green variants.

Only young asparagus is ideal for consumption. Once the buds begin to open, the shoots become woody very quickly. The good thing about this vegetable is that it has 93% water content.

Further, it is rich in many minerals and nutrients, thereby making it the best food. Chromium, a trace material in this vegetable is known to improve the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream to the cells. Asparagus is rich in amino acids as well.

The shoots from the vegetable are prepared and are served in some ways around the world. Most importantly, this vegetable is used as an appetiser. It is commonly used as a side dish as well.

In the case of Asian-style cooking, this vegetable is most-often stir-fried. This happens in the United States as well. This vegetable can be quickly grilled, and it is ideal to use this vegetable in soups and stews. Nowadays, people prefer eating it raw along with other fresh vegetables in vegetable salads.

The good thing about this veggie is that it can be stored for several years. The shelf life is extended.
