Okra is the most popular name for Ladies’ Finger. The latter name is used in English-speaking countries to denote this vegetable. It is otherwise referred to as gumbo or okra in these nations. It is a vegetable that grows in a flowering plant that belongs to the mallow family. This vegetable is popular for its seed pods that are eatable. There are different thoughts with respect to the geographical origin of this veggie. Some say that it is from South Asia, while some states that it is from Ethiopia. There are also supporters, who say that this veggie is from West Africa. However, the veggie is grown in tropical, warm temperature, and subtropical climates in the world.

The plant bears a number of dark green-coloured pods that measure from about 5 to 15 cms in length. The vegetable becomes ready to harvest within 45-60 days. Inside the pods, there are many small round white-coloured seeds that are naturally arranged in vertical rows. The pods are generally removed from the plant just before they mature and they are consumed as vegetables.

Even though there are varied varieties of this vegetable, all of them share a very similar nutritional profile. However, there are differences in their appearance and taste. Experts state that about half a dozen of okra is commonly available.


One of the unique features of this vegetable is the slimy juice it produces from its core. It is better not to overcook this vegetable and the inner pods should not be punctured to avoid the slimy juice from getting out. However, some people really wish to use the slimy liquid of okra in stews, soups, and broths to get the thickening effect.
