Many of us have seen leek, but we mistake it for spring onion. Yes, the leek is a vegetable that looks very much similar to that of spring onion, and it belongs to the same genus called Allium. It is true that leek is slowly gaining popularity around the world, but it remains in the category of somewhat of a gourmet type vegetable. Even though they have been around for several decades, most people have not heard about them. The availability of this vegetable is seen all round the year. Also, prices do not fluctuate much like the fluctuating prices of onion in India at times.

Usage Seasons:

From around the world, people use leek during winter or fall season. Mostly leek soup is enjoyed by people from around the globe. Particularly, potato leek soup is a highly popular dish for sure. This vegetable is known for the mild and creamy onion flavor and more importantly like that of scallions, leeks are also easy to make. Leek vegetable can also be added to salads to get the crunchy onion taste, diced, oven cooked and it is also consumed raw by some people.

The high potassium and fiber content makes this vegetable the best choice for health conscious individuals. Further, it is known to bring down the cholesterol levels besides providing many vitamins and minerals needed for the human body.

How Do Leeks Grow?

As they belong to the same family, leeks grow as regular onions. In general, the white part and the root part of this vegetable will be underground, while the green part will be visible on the ground. So, it becomes highly important that the vegetable should be properly cleaned before usage. The top part between white and green should be chopped off, and the roots should be removed separately.

Then, again, lengthwise cutting should be done before rinsing under cold water. Once the dirt is completely removed, you can dice up the leek. You should consume the white part of the vegetable. This part will have a mild flavour, and it is the most tender part of the vegetable as well. The green part will be tough with a tough flavour too.


As against forming a tight bulb like the onion, leek looks different as it produces a long cylinder of bundles lead sheaths.
