Spring onion is called by other names like salad onion, green onion, and scallions. Some people do not like the aroma and taste of regular onions, and for them, spring onions with milder aroma are the best choice. Some of the close relatives of this onion include Chinese onion, chive, leek, shallot, and garlic.


Green onions look like a bunch of grass with attached small onions or shallots at the end. But, the onions will look like small bulbs as the size is small as compared to regular small onions. The grass-like leaves are used as vegetables. They are either consumed cooked or as raw vegetables.

These leaves are chopped with other vegetables to add to veg-based dishes similar to that of garlic and onions. Spring onions can be stated to be young onions that are harvested before the bulb at the end swells to become more significant.

What to look for?

When you shop for spring onions, you should make sure that they have substantial white bulbs. The root hairs should be white, and they should be firmly attached. The stem should be of bright green colour. This vegetable is available around the year.

How about storage and usage?

If you wish to preserve this vegetable, the thing to remember is that it is highly perishable. So, it is better to refrigerate for not more than a week in a piece of plastic back in the crisper. To prepare dishes with this vegetable, the root should be trimmed, and the green leaves along with bulb should be washed thoroughly.

Then, they should be cut into thin slices or short lengths. The entire spring onion, inclusive of the top can be sliced and can be used raw in salads and also as garnishing. In some recipes, you can also use spring onions as against usual onions in some recipes.
