Sweet Potatoes belong to the morning glory family. This sweet-tasting vegetable in starchy and it is a root vegetable. The young leaves of sweet potato plants are sometimes consumed as legumes or greens.
Even though sweet potatoes are related to potatoes by name, they do not belong to the nightshade family. This vegetable comes with different types of skin colours, and they are seasonal available only in a specific part of a year in the market in India.
The excellent thing about the plant from which this vegetable is obtained is that it is known for its excellent healing properties. It is used in South American folk medicine for more than 5000 years now for its healing properties.
Nowadays, studies show that this plant will help with inflammatory-based conditions like diabetes and cancer. Even, it is used as an excellent raw material for the development of medicines and industrial products.
Sweet potatoes are referred to as yams. But, yam is a different vegetable. However, the name is used because the sweet potatoes belong to the same family as yams. In North America, people call orange and soft sweet potatoes as yams.
However, this vegetable is botanically different from a genuine yam. Yam is the native of Asia and Africa. As per the United States Department of Agriculture, the label yam is always accompanied by sweet potatoes in the United States Retail Sale market.
Origin of Sweet Potatoes
It is believed that this vegetable has its origin in South America or Central America. In the Central America, these veggies were domesticated nearly 5000 years ago. In the case of South America, the relics dating back nearly 8000 BC were found.
As the plant cannot withstand frost, it is ideal to cultivate this vegetable in an area with an average climatic condition. It will grow in abundance in areas of sunshine and warm nights.
