Foods To Ensure Safety Of Baby During First Trimester


It is true that during the early days of your pregnancy, you will experience nausea and loss of appetite. But, this first trimester is the period in which you should eat healthy and well not only for your sake, but also for the sake of the growing fetus. Good nutrition should form an important part of your pregnancy and there are some foods that can eat during the early stages of pregnancy for ensuring a healthier and happier baby. However, here are the details about some important nutrients and the foods that contain them, which can make an ideal diet for the early stage of pregnancy:

Folic acid:

This is a type of vitamin B that will help in prevention of neural tube defects and so it is important to include foods that are rich in folic acid. The deficiency of this vitamin, might lead to preterm delivery and by including foods that are rich in this content, abnormalities related to spinal cord and brain can be prevented in the growing fetus. Both yourself and your baby need calcium for healthy bones and teeth. This nutrient will also help in nervous, muscular and circulatory systems to run normally. If the baby does not get the essential calcium, the content that is already present in your body will be consumed by the baby, thereby leading you to adverse effects. So, it is important that you should consume a minimum of 1000 milligrams of calcium per day. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, cereals and fruit juices.

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D is something important for the bones and teeth of your baby. This vitamin is rich in fish like tuna and salmon. But, if you are a vegan, you can get the vitamin D from orange fruit and milk. Eggs are also rich in this vitamin, apart from being rich in protein. Eating eggs in hard boiled form at this stage can be ideal for your pregnancy.


Among the many nutrients you need at this stage of early pregnancy, protein is the most crucial nutrient. Proteins are made up of amino acids that are responsible for building the baby’s face and all other cell growth that happens in this growth process. Even though, more protein rich foods are important during the second and third trimester, you will be recommended by your doctor to take foods rich in this nutrient right from the early pregnancy as well. Eggs, fish and poultry are rich in this nutrient and you can also include dairy products, peanut butter, peas and dried peas at this stage.

In addition to these nutrients, iron is also something important at this stage. Iron content will increase the hemoglobin level for carrying oxygen to the different parts of the body.
